After reading this post and hearing other anecdotal stories from friends in Matamoros I can't find any reason to visit Mexico. It seems like a shite hole. I mean you can go to the USVI and BVI or Bahamas for better beaches and beautiful scenery and the people aren't looking for bribes and are as nice as can be. F' Mexico. I'm sticking with the Caribbean.

Matamoros

There's no reason to visit Matamoros...I've only stopped off there a few times traveling south...it's a shithole. But their are parts of Mexico that the Carribean can't rival and I think interior Mexican food is some of the best cuisine in the world.

then you're as fricking dumb as expected. I am in Mexico at least once a year and never have a problem. But then again, I'm not a moron. ETA: Just so you know American dollars make their economy run. Killing the gringos is BAD FOR BUSINESS. Guess who owns those businesses...the cartels. Guess what happens when some moron kills a gringo? You have what happened last year in Acapulco where the cartel beheaded 16 of its underlings for killing 3 tourists. You really are stupid.

You such a miserable little guy, aren't you?

But drink purified water. I once got a nice case of something. Anyway, the last wave hit me at the Acapulco airport. I was pleased though, because otherwise it could have led to a bad flight.

Great post. I once got all the way to Mexico and only had a copy of my birth certificate when an original was required. Back before passports were required to get into Mexico. The guy kept saying "I really wish to help you." I thought he just had broken English and he was saying "he wished he could help me but he couldn't." A Mexican nearby kind of yelled out "just give him $20". I did and was on my way.

This is good advice. Ive bribed myself out of a few of situations in south america. Its a way of life down there, all the cops are crooked. They will arrest you for minor things hoping for a bribe. (running a red light, stepping on the ancient pyramid ruins,or if you just dont want to be hassled at the border and have all your stuff unloaded and picked through.
If you dont pay it, the higher up you go the messier things get. A $20 will get you back on the road in no time.

If you fly into any of the major cities (I'd recommened the Capital) and stick to the tourist areas, you'll be fine. Mexicans are really hospitable, and the food is great.

Only been to Chichen Itza/Tulum/Yucutan, really didn't have any issues. That was back in 2000.

My cousin works in the MC area right now, seems to be doing okay there
