Quidam65's serious advice for travel to Mexico:

DON'T GO.

If you fly into any of the major cities (I'd recommened the Capital) and stick to the tourist areas, you'll be fine. Mexicans are really hospitable, and the food is great.

Makes me not want to visit.

My reaction to other people's BS is to argue against it. With the crazy people over there, I could see myself getting in a worse situation than I found myself in.

Not what I said...but a shakedown form corrupt officials is expected in 3rd world countries.

if you travel there and havent planned for it, you, like tube, are a moron.

Again, your failure at simple reading comprehension is astounding.

I really wonder if in your head you think you're typing one thing, but then in you're unmitigated anger you end up typing something else.

You said nothing of the sort in your prior post...you just berated him for encountering that type of situation from the best I can tell. He's offering the advice to "expect" shakedowns and how to deal with it. I think you're probably posting in this thread as you are because it's your MO to hold personal grudges.

I visit Cabo on the regular. Other than my buddy having to pay a bribe for drunkenly trying to purchase some illegal substances on the street, I've never had any problem.

If you go to the tourist areas you're pretty much safe from violence or shakedowns.

I've traveled all over Mexico way outside of the tourist areas and have never had a single incident. I don't think they're as common as this thread would lead you to believe, but they certainly occur.

You have what happened last year in Acapulco where the cartel beheaded 16 of its underlings for killing 3 tourists.

I totally believe that some cartels might be motivated to keep the tourist dollars coming, but some cartels also deal extensively in human trafficking and ransom demands. Not every cartel is reliant on USDs from the tourism.

If you have your wits about you traveling to Mexico is nothing but a thing. The same can be said of almost any place in the world, but Mexico just happens to more violent than most other countries.

That's a pretty gross oversimplification of the 14th (or 10th ppp) largest economy in the world.

And calm the frick down. It's Thursday morning.

It really is a shite hole of a country. I have many Hispanic customers and I hear a lot of the horror stories of family members being held for ransom and money being extorted if the cartel thinks you have any.

What's the max amount of cash would you recommend carrying around in your wallet?

I got pulled over by a cop in Costa Rica. I like to think I am an cunning linguist and that I speak Spanish but I really don't.

Anywho, he was basically trying to shake me down, but I was too stupid to figure it out. I was willing to go to town to the ATM and pay the....$1000 fine...or whatever insane amount he told me , but really he just wanted a hundred bucks. I was so persistent and serious about doing the right thing, I eventually (and unintentionally) drove him insane.

He gave me the world's biggest and he walked off, got on his motorcycle and drove off. When I got in the car, it occurred to me he wanted a bribe. "Ooohhhh"

Yeah, yeah: :csb: As Spidey said, PAY IT!

Always have a crisp $100 bill hidden in you shoe then use credit card. On our senior trip a buddy of mine got caught skinny dipping in the ppol by a cop. Some old ugly british girl was giving him a bj and he had to bride the cop to keep from going to jail.

So you intransigence paid off, huh. If I were a Costa Rican cop, I would have taken that $100 out of your arse.
