President Trump unexpectedly shifted his stance on Israel, warning Prime Minister Netanyahu to hold off on settlement construction

President Trump, who has made support for Israel a cornerstone of his foreign policy, shifted gears on Thursday and for the first time warned the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold off new settlement construction.
“While we don’t believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal,” the White House said in a statement.

Is the bottom quote all the WH said? Seems like a fairly common sense thing to say an not a major shift as is written.

It's a start

If Trump stands up to Israel and the religious right's obsession with them I'll be ecstatic.

Nothing in that quote revealed a reversal. Has it been confirmed he was supportive of expanding settlements? I like this btw ...Israel should just back off a bit on laying their pecker on the middle east's shoulder.

The Israelis are knocking down Jewish Settlements even as we speak. The key phrase in the statement is:

“While we don’t believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal,” the White House said in a statement.

They need to sit down, shut up and do as they're told. They literally only exist because we allow them to. When the White House says jump, they should be asking "how high sir?"

I'm not a member of "the religious right" and I am not obsessed with Israel. I just do not hate Jews and recognize what they bring to the table as the only democratic country in the entire Middle East.

Anyone who has even a poor understanding of the history of the region could tell you that further settlement expansion may not be helpful in achieving peace in that region . This isn't some mind blowing statement

This isn't about hating Jews, it's about objecting to blind support of a nation that takes our money and weapons, exists only because of our incredible generosity and then turns around and lies to us, spies on us, steals our intelligence and violates the terms of our agreements in order to antagonize the people we're trying to protect them from.

He recommended not do something they were not going to do. It makes him look as if he is not all Israel. He cannot be an arbiter if the Pals think he is bias to one side. This was discussed with BeBe.

Then Trump had a poor understanding of the region until today because he said the exact opposite a few days ago.

Pretty sure it doesn't jive with moving the embassy.
