Thing is all the things mentioned in tge speech, the slaves being brought in etc, the confederacy had nothing to do with, those vessels flew the flag of the United States, the confederacy did not import even one slave.

If you are to believe Mitch Landrieu , then your point is valid. But having grown up in New Orleans since I was 6 years old, I will tell you that Mitch is counting on 2 things.

1) he hopes that people over time will just forget about the statues and the fact that he ...and the next mayor will keep them in an abandoned car lot where they will just collect dirt.

2) If there are real bidders on the statues, he's going to put the price up too high and stipulate to the types of "organizations" that they will entertain offers from. I assure you, the one thing, the last thing that Mitch or anyone on that council wants is for someone to buy those statues.....he especially will never allow anyone within any proximity to New Orleans to get their hands on them.

Look for "take Them Down New Orleans" to go full trottle on trying take down Jackson and the statue of he LeMoyne Bros .

They aren't done.

They made it clear they intent to tear down more statues, rename buildings, rename streets, as well as removing plaques, etc, that represent anything they don't like.

This is just the beginning. Our Progressive friends love to rewrite and recreate history to their linking. Buckle up and be prepared to be MOCKED any time you point out that their revisionist history is wrong (first example being Jackson being part of the Civil War).

If you actually read Lincoln's own words, you will know that he only opposed letting the South leave the Union for financial reasons. He had no interest in the well-being of black people. The South generated the majority of income at the time. When asked if he would allow the South to leave, Lincoln said, "Who then would fill our coffers?"

Sounds like BR vs. St George.

Exactly. Lincoln never gave a shite about the slaves or slavery. His "great" proclamation only freed slaves in territory under Confederate control. He had the opportunity to free the slaves that were in areas under Union control, but he didn't. The abolition of slavery for Lincoln was only a tool to control the South.

Lincoln's abhorrence to slavery is public record.

Going back to his very 1st proposed bill as Congressman to abolish slavery in D.C.

The man's record is near unassailable.

I'm fully prepared for Jacksonville to go back to being known as Cowford.

I need to start a t-shirt line and a brewery.

Cowford Brewing Company has a nice ring to it.

Lincoln also said that blacks could never assimilate and even discussed putting them back on ships to Africa.

So yeah, I admire Lincoln too but let's not go out of our way to rewrite history to make him look perfect.

Also, the post you replied to is correct: every action Lincoln took after the war was to smother the south as he viewed them as a domestic enemy, and understandably so.

These debates always devolve into "well, Lincoln just cared about saving the Union and economics."

No shite.

We couldn't be some half-arse - half this/half that country and become the greatest country on earth. You're either in or you're out. There's no take-backs. Get off the continent if you don't want to play ball with how the country and the world was going.

And of course slavery was the issue and the economics of it...and how the South was losing all political power with new non-slave states...and how Lincoln won the Presidential election despite not being on 10 Southern State's ballots and how the Republicans controlled the House and Senate too.

Who knows if Lincoln's presidency would have abolished slavery without the Civil War.

Posters on here seem to constantly say, Lincoln wasn't against slavery...he liked slavery.

So why did the South total fricking freak out when he was elected and over-react and secede and start a war they knew they were going to lose due to the disparity in man-power and resources. They must have really really 100% believed that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery.

Antebellum Period .

There were no slave ports in New York Boston Philadelphia ,etc.....& New Orleans was it's largest hub.

Link to New Orleans being the largest slave market in the US or point of entry.

I've always understood it to be Charleston as well.
