Maybe, just maybe if Barry hadn't bitched and moaned about having to wear a flag lapel pin, or hadn't done a Michael Jackson crotch grab during the National Anthem, or campaigned against the military "air-raiding villages and bombing civilians," then maybe I'd cut him some slack. But he did, and so I don't.

Really have to admire how quickly the White House got this picture out on Instagram so all of its followers in the public and the media could come out in rapid response.

It may take them months or years to figure out ISIL, but it's only a matter of minutes and they've got the picture of W making the rounds.

No matter his distinction, as my Marine buddy said, Marines only salute those in caps/headgear, and only expect a return salute from same. Most of the people outraged over this have never served, and are only outraged because it is Obama.

He's the damn President. He's NOT in the Marines.

He is however the Commander of every Marine.

He can:
1) return a proper salute,
2) return a half-assed salute, or
3) totally ignore the salutes if he chooses.

It is completely at his discretion. With everything else going on, people choose to focus on this?

Of course he can. And, as this President in particular has shown, he'll do what he likes, period, - and protocols, customs, courtesies or the Constitution be damned.

He'll f*cking BOW to foreign leaders, but doesn't have the decency to respect his own troops to even know the rules.

I've passed a whole slew of troops (like 100) holding a salute up. I've had my hands full and given the greeting of the day. In other circumstances, I have enough self-awareness to know to keep the salute hand free and not do stupid acrobatics or salute with something in the right hand. For 24 years of commissioned service. This guy's been President for, what, 6?

Troops appreciate the mutual respect of the gesture. It is an obligation of officers (of which you so adroitly point out, POTUS is THE TOP DOG) to understand and abide by those customs and courtesies.
