Washington Examiner

quote:

President Trump should ratchet down his rhetoric and learn to live with a nuclear North Korea, according to Susan Rice, national security adviser under President Obama. In an op-ed for the New York Times, Rice said it's too dangerous for Trump to risk military engagement with North Korea with his "bluster," which could put millions of people in Seoul at risk. While she said the Trump administration should not "legitimize" North Korea as a nuclear state, it should start tolerating the new reality.

quote:

"History shows that we can, if we must, tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea — the same way we tolerated the far greater threat of thousands of Soviet nuclear weapons during the Cold War," she wrote. "It will require being pragmatic." Rice said the U.S. should make it clear that any use of nuclear weapons against the U.S. or its allies, or the transfer of nuclear weapons to third parties, would "result in annihilation of North Korea."

So, even though she's under scrutiny for her incredible, unprecedented number of unmaskings, she's got some advice for the current administration and President Trump.

quote:

But she said the second step is for Trump to end his tough guy rhetoric in order to avoid "blundering into a costly war." "John Kelly, Mr. Trump's chief of staff, must assert control over the White House, including his boss, and curb the Trump surrogates whipping up Cuban missile crisis fears. She also criticized the "bluster" emanating from both Pyongyang and Bedminster, N.J., where Trump is staying for most of August. Rice also recommended boosting its antimissile defenses, tightening sanctions against North Korea even further, and opening up talks with China about ways to negotiate down North Korea's arsenal.

We HAD to live with a nuclear USSR because we really had no other choice.

Military action is a viable choice, just a very costly one (particularly for South Korea).

AND, I think the USSR for all its faults, was at least a rational actor. Not sure about NK.

At the very least, military action needs to LOOK like a viable action so we have a credible threat.

All of the sanctions placed on them for the last 23 years were to prevent them from becoming a nuclear power. All that failed and they now encourage us to accept them as a nuclear power.

this is the equaliztion that i was speaking of yesterday

what kind of leadership is that?

ignore Trump (to get outside of TDS) for a second. we have been very passive with NK for decades, which has allowed them not only to develop nukes, but ICBMS capable of terrorizing the entire Pacific. tolerance is why we are here, with a crazy, evil dictator who was allowed to create this threat.

i'm not advocating for nuking NK (without Chinese approval, at least), but tolerance has clearly failed

so Rice is advocating for a failed policy while trying to make Trump as culpable for this situation as the truly evil dictator who is illegally developing nuclear weapons. yeah that makes sense. anyone who promotes this sophistry needs to examine their fricking head

It is the fault of the past THREE administrations that we face this today. Clinton enabled it , Bush and Obama did NOTHING.

We are going to have to tolerate Iran too I suppose. And Syria and everyplace else she and Obama effed up.

she's basically laying the seeds to preemptively excuse Iran going nuclear in a decade or so, after the terrible deal she helped broker

She's obviously so concerned about that prospect that she's publicly criticizing Trump.

I think behind the scenes it will have to be carrot and stick. Give up the nukes and we will make it worth your while. Help you feed your people and we will not interfere in your internal affairs.

If you don't, we have no choice but to deal with you.

North Korea has stated they will not put nuclear weapons proliferation on the negotiating table.

there is a major gap between "go to war" and "hide and accept a nuclear NK"

and to answer your question: diplomacy. we have to project strength (not hide from it) and ensure, via China, that NK does not have nuclear weapons. we have to pressure China, both publicly and economically, into solving this solution. the ideal solution is for the US, China, and SK to manufacture regime change that is palatable for SK/China

Obama "tolerated" it for eight years and look where it has gotten us.
