your assumption is faulty
everyone is basically begging China to take over NK. the fear isn't a "Western puppet state". the fear is that China doesn't want to have to pay to run NK. they don't want to deal with the humanitarian/refugee issues. it's that simple
like i originally said. the solution is regime change that is palatable to SK and China. many in SK have a desire for reunification but i think they'd settle for open access. then the question is who pays to run what's left of NK as China's puppet state

it is in NK. NK is very insular and closed. i think they don't even speak a form of Korean that is spoken widely in SK anymore. it's like cajun french v. modern french. both can understand the other but lots of idiosyncracies would reveal your hand
NK, due to race and structure, is pretty much impermeable in terms of spy networks

China does not want increased American influence on the peninsula.
This also pre-assumes there is a viable group in North Korea you could find that fits all the boxes that both sides require and done without the humanitarian and prolonged conflict and occupation problem China wants to avoid.
What is the evidence such an option is out there?

This. And another thought. The citizens of NK are all brainwashed in a completely faulty reality. They aren't bad people, but have a bad idea of what really is going on in the world. Specifically, their world.
If Kim and the regime is taken out, who reprograms these people? Is it even possible?

The CIA has sources in N. Korea. How loyal they may be is another story.
Seems like an old fashioned propaganda campaign promoting an uprising would be the rhing to do. It's been shown that western materials have been successfully smuggled into the country
My guess is that S Korea has tempered the US idea of assassination

you also have to remember their tech is so far in the past they rely on analog systems that are much safer in these terms

I always wonder about this. The story is that NK hacked Sony when The Interview was about to come out. If their tech is so antiquated, how were they able to accomplish this? Or did China give the assist on this one? Or, could NK operatives in the US carried this out?

Chipping away at the regime and allowing its own internal struggles to rule the day is hand in hand with the deterrence strategy.
Just keep that in mind.
Franky, if sanctions fail, that is probably what will be adapted by America going forward. Barring some sort of trigger that sets off an active conflict.

As the regime faces internal threats, they'll have less internal pressure to not launch an attack to unite their people. Keep that in mind.

Despite proclamations, NK is not an irrational actor. They have acted like one would expect in a deterrence arrangement. They also surely know that South Korea has the superior military and allies.
My guess is that up to the bitter end NK would see the threats internally as easier to deal with then attempting to throw a weakened regime into a fight that will all but guarantee their demise.
