because the majority of those crimes are committed by people for whom gun ownership is already illegal with firearms that they did not purchase. Most gun control measures take the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens who do not commit the vast majority of crimes. Criminals won't follow gun laws, just like they already break all of those other laws that make them criminals in the first place (assault, breaking and entering, grand theft auto, armed robbery, murder, possession with intent to distribute, larceny, ect)

This is why gun owners don't mind being called reactionary for being upset about what seems to be reasonable compromise. They understand the goals and methods of those that are asking them to compromise.
