It may be semantics, but it's an important distinction as modern life is showing an increasing number of out of wedlock, two-parent families as a viable social entity.

Not just the desire. They need to somehow stop the ridiculous notion that education is somehow selling out.

Just look back to when Cosby was vilified for simply stating kids need to be able to speak proper English.

The reality is they are so afraid of trying and failing that they simply point the finger at someone else.

Bad schools are a function of bad students. Your early posts on this reflected that (re: violence?)

perhaps MSNBC can come up with a special term on "Equality" for this issue?

Yes, and I would like to have even more ways for kids who want to learn to get out and go to a different school via vouchers, etc.

That being said: It's still the parents (collective) who are responsible for those terrible schools. The difference in a slightly lower than average school versus a bad school versus a terrible school is just the number of kids who don't care (i.e. parents who don't care).

Are you the product of or now in a unmarried two parent family? I ask because you seem hung up on this concept. Every single study I have seen on this subject disagrees with you can you please provide one that does not, here are a few you can read if you like.
Also found this jewel, strange how close the percentages follow out of wetlock births vs incarceration rates as well as income averages and likely graduation rates.

About 80% of first children born to black women were outside of marriage; 18% of these women were cohabiting. Among Hispanics, 53% of first children were born outside of marriage, and 30% of the women were cohabiting. Among white women, 34% of first children were born outside of marriage, 20% to cohabiters. Among Asians, 13% of first children were born outside of marriage; 7% of women were cohabiting.

This quote is particularly damning
quote:

It is estimated that almost half of children growing up today will spend some time living with an unmarried, cohabiting couple. This should be considered a national tragedy. For our nation's children, one of the worst things that could befall them would be a continuation of the current shift away from marriage.

How hard is it to get a library card or how expensive are used books? If a child is taught to read at an early age and the love of reading is fostered, that child will thirst for knowledge.
I understand if the parent can't read, this is a problem.

Unbelievable! The article and the up vote.

In my personal experiences as a student at a public (non-magnet) in Caddo Parish in the 80s and now with both my children attending Bossier public schools, the author is an idiot. Back to school nights are next week and I can already tell you who will be there and who will not.

Last year in a perfect example. There is an apartment complex next to middle school my youngest attended. Not a single parent that lived in those apartments whose child was in the same class as my child attended(0-6). This was in an art class and not honors, but they were not any of the other classes either. We moved to the honors math class and the number of parents was almost 100% - both parents and every ethnicity was represented.

I don't notice the lack of parents in the non-honors but it was brought to my attention by my neighor whose daughter has been in classes with my son since 5th grade. He is an AF officer stationed at Barksdale AFB and is an African-American originally from Michigan. He whispered to me in one of the classes, "The parents you don't see will be first ones complaining about their children's grades or will have a discipline issue. I have seen it before and too many times."

If a parent makes something important, the kids will see it as important. That can a positive or negative, but the parent MUST lead. No one can do it for you.

teen pregnancy (and abortion) rates are in serious decline from their peak in the late 80s/early 90s

I am aware of that - at least I have heard that reported.

This whole situation is very convoluted and certainly my suggestion is a broad brush statement that overlooks many of the subtleties of how our current society has evolved.

There is not enough space and I am not smart enough to write a dissertation that details the entire process from WWII to now that would convince anyone of how this all came to be.

I say again - the 'sexual revolution' of the sixties was a huge contributor, if not the genesis, of most of the cultural rot that has infected the social fabric of the nation. Free, unbridled, irresponsible sex has led to 'new normals' of unwed motherhood, abortion on demand, explosion of divorce rates, single parent families, kids having kids, lack of quality parental guidance, etc etc etc.

Many more contributors played a part of course, but my only input here is to isolate what I think a simple causative factor might be.

I get what you're saying but if a kid doesn't want to do the work, there's nothing his parents can do. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. I agree that parents are part of the problem but the kids themselves are the biggest problem.

Stop blaming black

not only do we not blame them for ANYTHING, we refuse to acknowledge their shortcomings, recognize the violence, sexism, racism and poverty that defines their community, but we give them approval if not outright praise for underachievement...and if you think I'm being racist, you do not know how homogenous this demographic really is...or what a statistical marvel the AA is (it's mind blowing)

and now we have this article. No one in the media or public will assign them an ounce of blame for anything for fear of being hammered into submission and having their career ruined by the PC brigade..."stop blaming" really should be "in case you were thinking about blaming"

The examples you set for your kids us very important.

If you have no father at home to set an example, an example has already been set, sadly.

If the neighborhood is full of drug dealers and no one trys to get rid of them, then they are the example these children grow up with, along with vulgar rap that is praised.

If a cop is trying to find a gang banger, and no one offers him up, that neighborhood is basically approving if his lifestlye.

Gulliani proved you can change the course of a city with effort.

This is a problem today amongst all races, just more so in the black community.

Is there any desire to better one's self anymore?

Good greif, I am sure inner city kids have their share of obstacles to overcome but how many millions of other kids around the world would love to have their opportunities?

People need to quit blaming other races and put in some hard work to improve their own situation.

This is the answer. This is the answer to poor grades, poverty, drugs, crime.

The absence of marriage is what causes all of the problems of the black community. Marriage is the foundation of a healthy society.

This has to be one of the most ignorant things I have read recently. Are you suggesting human DNA has changed in the last few decades? What else could cause these kids to be different.

There is a word for the sentiment required to craft the thoughts you see in the OP's linked article: racism.
