Do you really believe half the people in America get all of their income from the government for free?
Well - half aren't paying any income tax, so they're getting a free ride on federal highways, national defense, court system, Congressional and executive branch salaries - just a whole host of things. Those actually earning wages have SS and Medicare deductions, and, as you mention, they're paying sales taxes and transaction taxes on their living expenses.
However, this same half that pays no income tax also receive some sort of government assistance, whether it be housing, Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, what have you.
So, half rely on government assistance, while paying no income tax - therefore double dipping at the real taxpayers' expense.

1% means nothing, really.
You've got to slice that up about 10X to get a real picture.

What would happen if they had to pay taxes on their menial wages? Would they be able to afford all of the worthless shite that we sling to them out of China?
There is a circular relationship between buyers and sellers; many forget that.

They can work a second job.

We don't have enough demand for everyone to have a job, but we can expect half of the country to have two.

I don't know about this as many will not seek jobs, will only seek certain jobs, or can not find the 'right' job.

I could go get hired as a waiter or dishwasher or any other number of low paying (but paying) jobs today. People that aren't working are doing so because they are "above" what jobs are available to them.

Hey I'm no 1% er, but the truth is we all pay too much because so many pay zero....or even get $$$ for free..what am I missing?

Meh, that's income tax only. When you add Social security, medicare, medicaid, state and local sales taxes, property taxes, etc. etc., I still pay a greater percentage of my income in taxes than the rich. I'd bet adding that would show the middle class paying way more in taxes than the rich.

There is some truth to that, but by and large, it is sensational. Not everyone is cut out for service jobs. That is just reality.

frick that. If I'm faced with either not paying my mortgage by not working jobs that are "below" me, or swallowing my pride; I'll take the job (or jobs... gasp) below me that every time.

I was with you 100% up to here. I think that 'we' make it far too easy to not work. Make it harder to get by without working and I think we would be amazed at how many would find their way to a job.

good for you, but the reality is even then there are not enough of those jobs to allow everyone in the bottom 50% to have two jobs.

everyone uses subsidies, child deduction, interest...
around 3% of your federal tax dollars go to the poor...
if there were no poor, what would that make you?

So are regressive tax systems.
A flat tax is not regressive. By definition. A regressive tax would be taxing the poor at 30% and the rich at 10%.
