Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of a flat tax? A huge percentage of Americans would pay $0 income taxes if you exempted the first $30,000.
Probably not a whole lot different than the current 45% that don't pay....

Just do away with deductions.
Then implement flat tax.
Then nobody has to worry about doing taxes

So basically, increase the payroll tax by 13%?
Posted on 4/21/17 at 12:21 pm to cahoots
Mind you. I oppose flat tax

Don't own a business don't know what that is so yeah whatevs
Our system is so complex now because of all the deductions and credits etc.

Dude even Rand's plan is 14.5%. I'm lowering that to 13%. You aren't gonna get away with 10%. But let's pretend you could...a family of 4 making 100K would be paying MORE taxes, even at 10%!

The payroll tax is just the percentage of your income that goes straight to the federal governement to pay for SS and Medicare. 7.65%.

Eliminate withholding and have everyone write a check in April.
The tax code will be changed very quickly.

What should we change it to?

Can you imagine the monies saved by abolishing the IRS and simplifying taxes....would be huge but will not happen as too many special interests would be wounded

Conservatively, a flat income tax percentage would have to be set at 13%.
Let’s say you’re married and you have two kids. Your household income is exactly $100,000. Here’s what your tax liability is under the current system with a standard deduction and no other special circumstances. I realize that taxes can get far more complex, but this is a look at your worst case scenario (for the most part).
AGI = $100,000
Standard deduction = 12,700
Exemptions = 8,100
Taxable income = 79,200
Child credits = 2,000
Net tax liability = $9,278 or 9.278%
In order for your effective tax rate to reach 13% (break even), you’d have to have a household income of roughly $125,000. The average American household income is less than half of that.
Are yall sure you want to do this? Seems like the middle class is going to get a pretty substantial tax increase under a flat tax system. I’m genuinely curious.
Most people would see a serious increase in their tax burden if it were 10%....almost all of the middle class would see on at 20%.
My wife and I are in the top 6% of family incomes and our effective federal tax rate is a little over 11%...we would see a modest decrease at 10% and a sizeable increase at 15%. We both top out of social security around November every year. Due to the nature of my "job" I have a bunch of deductions every year so our AGI is substantially lower than our gross...if it weren't for those deductions our effective rate would be closer to 20%.

Yep.
No doubt some people would be surprised at what exactly "fair share" meant to them, though.
I think all flat tax proposals include a fairly sized bottom income, so your numbers would change based on that.
