Hey, protectionism and higher taxes (which U.S. consumers pay in the end) is MAGA'ing.

Seems the "conservatives" here think so.

It's no use. This board has been crazy for protective tariffs ever since Trump first told them China was kicking out arse. They don't care that they will pay more for goods to subsidize manufacturing jobs that will shortly be replaced by robots. This will only cost citizens money and speed up automation in the US. Not to mention once in place and that revenue stream gets dedicated to spending, we will never get rid of these taxes even when those limited manufacturing jobs get automated.

I don't understand why this board gets so angry that China subsidizes our consumption and raises the quality of life here on the backs of their poor citizens.

I tend to think this won't pass, but I've been surprised by a lot, so what do I know.

We really need to move to value-added trade data. It's more difficult to play political games with.

My question is, why would Ryan, someone that railed against protectionism during the presidential campaign introduce a protectionist tax scheme such as the 20% blanket tariff on imports (aka, border adjustment tax) as the very first piece of legislation?

Seems fishy. I don't trust him.

The world is funny

You wanted protectionism, Ryan is offering it, and now you don't trust him

I didn't want it, supported Ryan, and now don't trust him

Two countries have similar markets, and make similar and competitive products. Each sells for $100. Each sells both domestically and abroad.

Country "A" exports it's product to Country "B" where it captures 50% marketshare d/t identical quality and pricing. Both A & B products sell for $100 in Country "B".

Meanwhile, Country "A" imposes a 20% tax on Country "B" exports. So in Country A's domestic markets, Country B's product captures only 5% marketshare d/t identical quality but with 20% higher pricing.

So in the combined A & B Marketplace, despite being nearly identical products, Country A's product enjoys a 72.5% marketshare, while B's withers away at 27.5%.

Ask manufacturers in Country "B" "what does that mean--level the playing field?"
Give me one example.
No. No.

Let's do it differently.

Take auto exports vs imports from the same country. Address trade tax differentials. Textiles? Beef? Ag Products? Steel?

Steel?

And what happened when we put a protective tariff on steel? We gained back some jobs in domestic steel manufacturing industry, but cost a lot more jobs in steel consuming industries.

Tariffs never protect jobs for the nation as a whole. The government always picks winners and losers. However, the American consumer is always the biggest loser as we have to pay more of our hard earned money to subsidize these domestic manufacturers through higher prices for goods. Protectionism does not work. It is just welfare by another name.

That is exactly right.

One question I sometimes ask these protectionist is "will you quit the job you have now to make Christmas lights if our tariffs become so high that Christmas light productions comes back to the USA?'

The next question is "if you would quit your job who is going to quit their job to do your job?"

Liberals and unions and protectionist here just don't understand---there are a relative few who actually wish to work that are not working in our economy today.
