Sorry I should've specified the actual coastal cities. Yes I realize eastern Oregon/Washington are conservative.

Austin is heading the same direction (or already there, with homelessness and crime).
Austin (49 percent non-Hispanic white) doesn't have the same demographic advantage of Portland (80 percent white).
Berkeley has Oakland and all its problems right next door. If the shite hit the fan in Oakland, those white liberals in Berkeley better vamoose.

No worries I just cringe whenever I hear something along the lines of, "lol let's let the left coast fall in the ocean", when there are a large amount of folks whose opinions are not accurately reflected by their respective state governments or national representatives.

Is the crime really getting that bad in Austin? I admit most of my time in Austin has been spent in Westlake, Dripping Springs and other small lake areas, but didn't realize crime had gotten bad in Austin.

Take shelter from the Safe Space.........

Yes. Murders galore. Pflugerville is a hellhole now. Like you say, you didn't go east of Interstate 35.
Drive-by shooting of a construction worker on campus a few days ago, a murder of a UT student by a homeless thug about a year ago, then today's stabbings.

Wow didn't even realize any of this.
Are the Mexican gangs/drug cartels taking ahold? I didn't really think Austin had a ghetto like Houston or Dallas.

Portland has a pretty low crime rate for a city its size.

I imagine demographics play into that pretty strongly.

Maybe I'm just a dirty fricking wook, but I only like Nashville better. Portland is pretty awesome if you can stomach the opioid-ridden bum class.
Miami is cool as long as you don't mind shitty traffic (not normal big city shitty either) and stay away from the douchey uber rich areas.
New Orleans is a unique American city, the only places even close are DC and Philadelphia in terms of history and culture (and Boston but frick Boston) its like Savannah or Charleston but with all the good big city stuff too. Just be very sparing in your visits to the French Quarter, not because of the smells (you get used to that but because tourist crush is fricking horrible anywhere.

Yep....It's a nice bonus considering the rain

The Mexican drug cartels are building houses and operating businesses all the way up to Tyler (at least).
They are everywhere. We are inundated by Democrats.

You don't have to go east. There are communities very near the biggest cities that are conservative. There's a lot more than you think.

Beer scene in portland is much better than Seattle, both are 1000x anything in the south
Seattle outdoors are awesome but so are Portland and you can actually be in the country in 30min as opposed to hours in Seattle with the traffic. Cost of living here has gone up a lot in the past 10yrs but still not as bead as Seattle, both better than California though.
Someone posted proximity to Olympic peninsula as a plus for Seattle....I can drive there quicker from Pdx because traffic isn't as bad.
I like Seattle I go there all the time but there's a reason they're all moving here. It's like Seattle 25 years ago.
Hunting and fishing out of Portland is better because of access. I can drive 25min and have my boat in the water fishing for salmon and not fight crowds. You can't do that in seattle /thread

And the only places in the south I would even consider moving to from here would be charleston, savannah, or Asheville and none of those are similar sized cities to Portland at all, I just like them. It would be very hard for me to leave. Oregon has everything I'd want.

Is the homeless problem in Portland as bad as people say it is? I was in San Francisco for the first time in a few years this past August and I think it has gotten even worse there which seems almost impossible

How many different beers make a beer scene better?
Posted on 5/1/17 at 11:26 pm to TheXman
Yes it's awful and worse every year

Quality not quantity - well quantity too but quality is what I meant was better
