Not attacking you jax so dont take this as me coming after you. I acknowledge that you dont agree with them here

I mean this is why we cant have nice things, or hell even scared to state an opinion in classes. Its bullshite. They are fighting fascism (which we arent even close) with communism. its just straight bullshite. Yes, yes this was a melt

Really.

Greenville is a rather nice area. Cost of living is stupid cheap, with a 30 minute drive to the Blue Ridge mountains.

Norfolk and VB are on the beach at least. Lots of stuff to do as well, and still a rather short drive to the Shenandoahs if you prefer mountains over beach.

Nashville, New Orleans and Miami would be the three I'd definitely put above Portland.

Maybe I'm just a dirty fricking wook, but I only like Nashville better. Portland is pretty awesome if you can stomach the opioid-ridden bum class.

Why?

If I wanted pretentiousness coupled with the great outdoors I'd live in Seattle, with much more to do.

I love the food scene, beer scene, proximity to absolutely gorgeous outdoor spots, and the general architecture of the homes (mostly Craftsman). Now, it wouldn't be my first choice in Oregon (that would be Bend or Ashland), but I thoroughly enjoy visiting there.

Plus I can light a fatty and no one cares.

Eh..ok I guess?

I went in to Portland with high hopes and was sorely disappointed. It would be different if it was cheaper to live there or something...but it strikes me as nothing more than Seattle's little brother trying to hard with even more obnoxious hipster frickheads if that were even possible.

Portland is a place where totally not racist white kids can sleep outside in the city and not get murdered, mugged or raped all that often.

True....Portland is even whiter than Seattle, which I didn't think was possible.

Granted, it's been a while since I've lived there, but the cost of living (well, rent-wise) was more comparable to Birmingham than to Seattle. I had a studio in the northeast quarter for like $700 a month and it wasn't a shithole.

The hipsters have probably gotten worse, though. You're right on that count. I can just blend in with them well enough for it not to be a complete headache.

Ya...I think those days are long gone man. Gentrification is in full effect over pretty much the entire city. There might be a few spots here and there though I guess.

Your town ain't half bad, either. I spent a summer split between St. Mary's and Whitefish.

Waaaaayyyy Better in Portland - and this isn't close.

Better in Seattle - with the caveat that the traffic is 1000 times worse getting to the outdoor activity.

Yes, lots of homeless and it's getting worse. It is commonplace to see the tents all over the place. My #1 complaint and a lot of people are sick of it. It's a lot worse than 5 or 10 years ago. Seattle has the same problem.

Homeless people like to live in nice places too.

I disagree in terms of proximity and I'm right.

Every time I read this sentiment, I know you bastards haven't been anywhere in the rural parts of OR, WA, or CA. They're just as disdainful and distrustful of government in general as we are.

This is true. However, Portland is significantly cheaper than Seattle. You're nuts if you think that the food and beer scene is better in Seattle. Let's throw wine in there, too. Portland blows Seattle out of the water on all counts. Plus, Portland doesn't have the traffic problems that Seattle has. Portland is much more liveable than Seattle - cheaper, less traffic, better public transportation, etc...

Seattle, with the Puget Sound, North Cascades and proximity to the Olympic National Forest may have more natural resources close by, but Portland is no slouch.

Portland loves it's liberals and hipsters because they make a good cup of coffee, open cool art galleries and shops, and make make neighborhoods eclectic and cool. Portland is reaching it's limit on how far the will let the hipsters go, when it comes to embracing the homeless. The homeless problem is a becoming a problem that the city wants to address. They are proposing restrictions on where the urban outdoorsman can pitch a tent, because they are discouraging people from coming downtown. I think what you'll see is that they will shift some of these people from the downtown out to some areas where they won't bother so many folks.
