Re: Boston Suspect; Feds dropped the ball twice

quote:

U.S. authorities put alleged Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev on two separate watch lists in 2011 after Russian security agencies twice reached out to their American counterparts, raising new questions about missed opportunities to prevent the attack.

Russian officials contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in March 2011, then reached out to the Central Intelligence Agency in September of that year, citing concerns Mr. Tsarnaev might have been associating with extremists, according to U.S. officials.

The FBI has said it interviewed Mr. Tsarnaev and conducted a threat assessment, but found nothing "derogatory" that could prompt further investigation. A U.S. law-enforcement official said the case was closed after three months, after the FBI asked Russian counterparts for additional information, but received none.

U.S. officials said Wednesday that at the request of the CIA, Mr. Tsarnaev was added to a broad database called Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, which holds hundreds of thousands of names flagged by multiple U.S. security agencies.

Because Mr. Tsarnaev was a permanent resident of the U.S., the CIA alerted relevant domestic agencies, including the FBI, "specifying that Tamerlan may be of interest to them," a U.S. intelligence official said.

"What does it matter, anyway". (Hillary Clinton re Benghazi). Same here. Time to move on. PS...they didn't drop the ball...they purposely hid it. Political correctness. Muslim feelings.

Beck is showing interviews with the kids who got whacked in the Chechnyan school massacre. Ugly stuff. When they ramp it up over here...the folk will kick this bunch of pricks out, and we'll take care of business. Enter George Patton.

Is 'groupthink' maybe becoming an issue here on the PT?

"It was Bush's fault."

"It is because of the sequester."

No, ya'll are wrong. FedGov is awesome. Let FedGov run healthcare and everything else that people need in life.

Big Government is always best. Obama and Hillary would never lie about that.

It's pretty disturbing that the Govt is collecting all of this personal data and invading the privacy of Americans, but when given the data, they can't even follow through

While I agree that its fricked up that they didn't put them on watch list properly, how would him being on a watch list prevented him from buying pressure cooking and fireworks?

They were on the watch list properly... The govt failed to follow-up when they were alerted he was leaving the country. Had they done so and dug into his youtube postings and other social media rants, or the fact that he had been kicked out of 2 mosques for radical outburst, we likely wouldn't be in this situation.

This is the most disturbing part to me. The fed gov't seemed to know an awful lot about these guys. More than I think they should have known honestly.

Then what's the fricking point of making a terrorist watch list if you're not actually going to follow up on it? Especially after one of them leaves the country and returns....
