Sticking with the "social justice" bent of this Pope, there is little doubt #1 will be the object of scorn and derision.

This was a good thread on this very concept on the pope's misunderstanding of greed and how it drives capitalism and thus being a net positive for everyone.

This pope is unbelievably economically illiterate.

using the "g-word" in that context will draw ire, but we have to look at what "greed" means

does being "Greedy" mean to believe that if you create a product or service that helps people, and they're willing/able to pay, then you should benefit for that product/service? does being "greedy" denote a desire to own more than is necessary to sustain life at a certain level?

This pope makes me want to leave the Catholic Church more and more. He is the worst pope in a long long time. Just stick to teaching the Gospel, not trying to influence governments with terrible, failed ideas like socialism and climate change.
The role of the church is to influence the world. He's attempting to do that in the way he believe is best.

I'd recommend that you either leave the church, or accept the role it's always had.

John Stossel's show on greed is still top quality after all these years. And I love Ted Turner in it.

This is wrong. Not in 2014. It's role is simply to guide it's members. Trying to influence the world for 1,500 years led to a some good but a lot of bad.

But even if true:

quote:

He's attempting to do that in the way he believe is best

That doesn't mean he gets a free pass. His ideas are utterly wrong and damaging to global prosperity. Capitalism has done more to unleash the collective genius and productivity of mankind than anything that ever came before and catapulted our technological innovation 5,000 years ahead of the pace we were at previously. It has also done more to raise the standard of living the majority of people than anything that came before, especially communism or socialism which brings everyone down to the lowest levels rather than lifting the poor to the highest levels. "Income inequality", a terribly misused word, is not the same as standard of living. Just because my neighbor makes more than me today than he did yesterday does not mean I can afford less of something today than I could yesterday. The true greed is from those wanting to take the wealth earned by the successful rather than earn it themselves.

Was an hour long special back when he was with ABC. Can't remember if the billion dollar discussion was part of that, but I don't think it was. I vaguely remember that discussion when he was talking with Larry Elison.

They overreached. Jesus started the Church, with St. Peter as the first pope, over 2,000 years ago. He never tried to change government policy. He preached how each individual should live. That is the example to follow. The idea of the Church influencing world events is due to power-hungry popes wanting more power.

Wut?

This article is absolute garbage. More commentary by people who know nothing combined with the false "Francis is the first pope evar" narrative

I feel like we are having two different conversations here. You focused on one part of my first response to you and ignored the much larger part of it. Then you bring in jaded out of left field. I don't know where you got that from.

There were many good popes but also many bad ones. It was a political post rather than a spiritual one for a long time.

I loved Pope John Paul II and liked Pope Benedict XVI. I have yet to find a single redeeming quality of Pope Francis I.

This should be good. I've said the "A" in AGW reeks of geocentrism. A pro-AGW edict would perfectly complete that legacy.

I was 21 when he died. He was the pope since before I was born. My knowledge of him as pope was limited and I was too young to have formed a reasonable opinion (few have the proper life experiences at age 21 to have any business having an opinion on such things). What I know of him now is that he helped bring down the USSR, the bastion of communism, the greatest evil of our time. I do not know of what else he might have done.

If he advocated for socialism and climate change policies, then I will need to adjust my opinion of John Paul II.

"greed" is a very interesting topic. i've been thinking about trying to make a "one thread to rule them all" thread about greed, touching on economics, politics, philosophy, etc. it may be too much for one singular discussion (that may devolve into solely a religious discussion, which, on here, would defeat the purpose)
