I know it's a very subjective question, but are you willing to, or do you pay more for American made products "if" they are clearly a better product than made overseas?

I ran into this delimma recently with a TENS unit. I had purchased an inexpensive one made overseas that only lasted 4 months, and their "lifetime warranty" was a joke. I decided to look for a quality unit made in the US, but the few I found are professional units that costs 5 to 10 times what the cheap one is.

Not necessarily. Depends upon the product. Don't think I'll purchase a Ford/GM/Dodge product again, as a case in point.

Depends on what it is.

Your TENS unit probably cost 35 - 50 bucks. If you expect the 200 - 300 dollar unit to last more than 20 months then the price is right.

If not, then 5 35.00 units is about the same.

Depends on how much more it cost/how much better it is

Your question is unnecessarily compound and should be separated into:

1. Are you willing to pay a premium for a superior product?
2. Are you willing to pay a premium for a product made in America that is otherwise identical to an imported product?

The questions really have nothing to do with one another. Personally, I would answer yes to the first and no to the second.

It was $27. Worked great for 4 months though.

I don't understand the question.

The words "American made" aren't required in your question.

Consumers make such decisions all the time. The answer is "yes, maybe". As in, "yes, people will pay more for a better product" if they assess that the added quality is worth the added cost.

I mean, given a choice between a pretty good car or a great car with the latter being $1K more, most Americans will buy the latter. But, if the latter is $40K more, they'll probably blink.

Somewhere in the middle resides the sweet spot of better quality and better value.

That's fair.

Also why I said a "better" product. Obviously no one is willing to pay more for identical products.

It used to be that the "Made in USA" automatically meant that it was a superior product. Automobiles not withstanding.

I pay more for quality depending on my use of the item.
I pay top dollar for the high quality tires and replace them at 30K because I live in the country and my wife drives to and from work in the middle of the night.

I pay 3 dollars a bottle for red wine because I can't tell the difference between it and 100 dollar wine.

I don't look for USA made unless I have stock in the company. IE, most of my household products are made by Proctor and Gamble.

At least that's what the marketing told you. In the same way that "made in Germany" or "produced in France" doesn't automatically make something superior, there have always been shitty products stamped with the American flag. Now, a couple of decades ago when the market was being flooded by cheap Chinese goods, did it usually indicate a better product? Sure. But it's never been dispositive, contrary to what our rose-colored glasses might tell us

I try to buy American made products right now. Shoes, clothing, and musical instruments are the easiest to research and find.

Today they aren't. In some things, they've never been.

Take cookware for example. Wife and I love to cook. Lodge is a fine American brand, but doesn't hold up to the quality or reputation of Le Creuset or Staub. Even with the much more hefty price tag, the latter brands are worth it.

I was very disappointed when my cast iron set was delivered and I saw how rough the iron was. At some point, I'll probably sand it down myself and reseason it. Or just replace it. We'll see.

Depends on the product.

I'm an engineer and I have specifically procured American steel because their are quality control issues with overseas mills vs. steel mills here in the U.S.

For example I've ordered 304L stainless from a Chinese manufacturer and I know I received regular 304 or poor quality 304L (because it did not weld like 304L is suppose to weld). Quality control is a major problem with all type so metals from China.

However when it comes to my personal use, I have no issues with shopping at Harbor Freight for cheap tools. I know they are cheap and I know they will probably break but they are so damn cheap I buy them anyway because they service their purpose at the time.

Now if I were a professional mechanic I would never buy that crap.

Yeah I agree, thus why I stated it's a very subjective question.

But take most consumer products nowadays. I don't think there are any televisions being produced in the US anymore.

The biggest factor in this is it that it must be of superior quality to justify the price differential.

in a lot of ways, this is still the case. I try to buy local and "made in the US" any chance I can, because of the influx of chinese parts - "Made in the US" still does mean better quality a good bit of the time.

As for your title:

I do like my Avacadoes from Mexico, Maple from Canada, and coffee from Columbia Great "American Made" products

Same here. Half of my tools are from Harbor Freight. Hell, most of the big brand name tools are made overseas anyway.
