Not sure there's much hope for this generation:

1. Not sure what I want to do with my life, but I want a job where there is little work and the pay is good.

2. I'm majoring in History with a minor in Global Poverty.

(my note: I'm pretty sure Starbucks has a surplus of baristas with useless college degrees).

P.S. Statements made by 2 different people. One a member of a 'protected' class.

Sounds like a smart kid. I’m not sure what’s wrong with this.

Also, why is a history degree useless?

What jobs out there and in the future do you foresee requiring a degree in history?!?! Unless this kid goes on to law school, he'll be joining the ranks of retail workers with useless degrees. Until they're all replaced by bots.

I love history and it's one of my hobbies! But I would never pay for my kid to get a degree in it.

Exactly!

This is what happens to the entitled generation who doesn't understand that, in order to get something, you must contribute something.

It's not. The Global Poverty minor is kind of concerning, but a history degree is a good base of learning.

But by itself, it's not a very employable degree. Paired with a law degree, or a business masters it could have good potential.

Otherwise you are looking at non-profits or Starbucks. Of course there are plenty of overachievers that will get great jobs regardless of major. Some people are just dynamic (or have great family connections).

But your average person with a history degree and a minor in global poverty, with no advanced degree, does not have great prospects.

The vast majority of non-technical/non-scientific corporate America jobs are the same, and pretty much any degree would work for them.

What type of degree would you pay for?

Super dedicated to the research - they'll get to study poverty first hand.

I've seen quite a number of kids take that kind of route. It's doesn't end well for them.

Sometimes when they have children they awaken from their foolishness.

An engineer, a computer programmer and a liberal arts graduate were asked what question do you ask most in your current job.

The engineer said, "How can I make this work better."

The computer programmer said, "How can I make this easier to work with."

The liberal arts graduate said, "Would you like an order of fries with that?"

Any technical degree (not Aerospace or CS because there is a glut of students, need some more focused specializations), sciences, math & applied math, actuary science, pharmacy, any degree that prepares for laboratory work, nursing, solid degrees whose graduates are good critical thinkers.

exactly because "back in my day" me and my friends went to school for jobs that overwork us and pay us minimum wage.

The instruction aligned with his minor is probably very depressing.
