exactly because "back in my day" me and my friends went to school for jobs that overwork us and pay us minimum wage.

The instruction aligned with his minor is probably very depressing.
You’re assuming that the same kid made both statements.

Statements made by 2 different people.

why is a history degree useless?
Because the very generation thats trying to find no work, good paying jobs right out of college, are the ones attempting to re-write history

I want a job where there is little work and the pay is good.
That's called winning.
When my family made it to America part of them were coal miners in WV. My paternal grandfather and his brothers became a lawyer, baker and firefighter. I have to guess that seeing their dad and uncles coming back from the mines as black as night and exhausted played a part in their decisions. There is virtue in hard work but I'm sure if they had a choice between that or coding and coding would've won almost every single time. Black lung, long hours and getting your butt kicked daily aren't exactly great draws. The "Dirty Jobs" types should be commended, paid well and celebrated because without them society collapses but it takes a toll. This is one small reason why automation is becoming more of a thing in various fields.

Rewriting History is a full time job

because history is a fricking hobby
There’s no problem with a history (or other liberal arts degree) if you’re a double major in something practical and in demand, or if you have minors in those fields. I had a history major, but minors in business and computer science, and I’ve worked in IT for 25 years.
After all the whole idea of the college education is to produce well rounded people. Where these kids get in trouble is ignoring the practical and professional programs that they’ll need to earn a living.

You boomers are so fricking clueless it’s no wonder the country is in the state it’s in. There aren’t enough jobs to support these graduates in these fields. At least 70% of college students should be preparing for a blue collar job.
But surprise, you boomers killed many of those industries in exchange for cheap goods from foreign lands. While simultaneously demanding that every kid be college educated.
Well done.

Sounds like a smart kid.
Sounds lazy to me. These types of people are low rung cogs that have to keep hopping jobs as they are figured out. There are creators / builders that create jobs for the cogs. Then there are self-motivated cogs that want to produce at a high level and be useful. Then there are mid level cogs that have some pride in their work and generally want to be productive. Lastly, there are low level cogs that attempt to slide by doing the bare minimum and hope to avoid being noticed. There are intelligent people in every group, but people that have work ethic, pride and are willing to challenge themselves make their lives and the lives of everyone around them better.
The low level cogs will soon be unemployable as ai will take over their modest responsibilities.

A reasonable, practical and measured statement. That’s rare around these parts.

I have a history degree and I guarantee I make more than many of you. Some of us wanted a well rounded liberal arts education; higher education shouldn’t just be job training.

I guarantee you're not working in a job or field that's directly related to history.

So what? You have such an odd perspective.

I hold a degree in history, CWM.

Well, there is no field a history degree is pinholed to. It’s just a liberal arts degree that allowed me to study topics I found interesting. History encompasses anything and everything.
