I guess I'm the only one, but, I think Custer was stupid and arrogant to get off his horses, form a circle and fight overwhelming numbers of Indians. I would have moved position to a favorable or better one, regroup to a winnable position, and fight to win later. Maybe even rejoining the other 2 groups for a larger winning battle.

At the risk of being a contrarian, I'd go with Washington, Lee, Grant, Eisenhower, and/or Patton as being more famous soldiers than Custer.
(I'd also add Bowie, Crockett, Travis, Austin, and Houston to my list, but I'm admittedly biased)

I am by no means well versed in the history of the battle but when I visited the site most of the markers for where the soldiers fell were spread way out as if they died in a running battle.

The best evidence suggests that Custer was crossing the river into the village with 5 companies when he was shot.
The soldiers scooped him up and withdrew several hundred yards up the hill. The Indians quickly massed on this force and annihilated it.
Earlier in the day he told one of the Crow scouts that he planned to attack that same afternoon. The scout told him, "Neither of us live to see the end of this day."
