the best thing coming is all the money that the broadcast channels will have to repay the advertisers for declining ratings...

I did nothing that normal people couldn't have done. I noticed that the "Domecoming" tickets for Falcons @ Saints in 2006 were selling for more on eBay than the entire season tickets cost.

I called and asked how many could I buy. They said 64 or so. I bought them.

Could have been you, mate.

Probably right, at my in-laws yesterday, and for the first time in more than 40 years that I've known them, no NFL was on. F-I-L said he had gotten tired of the antics off and on field, but the anthem was the last straw.

I think that's what you're seeing.

Dickwads on Tigerdroppings have been doing exactly that, since the beginning.

Yeah, because the millions of fans who have explicitly told the NFL that they refuse to support those who disrespect our country, our flag, and the people it represents are lying.

I've been done with the NFL for a while, but it is shocking to see that they apparently are intent on doubling down on stupid until they completely destroy their brand.

Couldn't disagree more.
You have it reversed, protesting the players support of a racist group (BLM) and its anti police agenda is primarily cause of this years drop off. Product on field has not changed significantly year to year. But there is a huge difference from one idiot disrespecting America and whole teams in unity.

NFL needs to tell "constitutional rights protesters" to STFU at work, and pursue their constitutional rights to be unpatriotic, racist, anti police arseholes on their own time.

The funniest thing to me is that Shaun King and BLM are "protesting" the NFL and are themselves taking claim for the drop in numbers

They probably make up for less than 5% in the viewing reduction. The vast majority (95% plus) are MAGA patriots, many of whom actually own tickets.

It is definitely a complex scenario. I think the protests made many people step back and ask if they really wanted to support this and then they probably realized how much money and time they wasted on overpaid brats and thought there might be a better way to spend their time and money regardless of the protests.

The left keeps wanting to make this about "protesting" .

It's not about "protesting". The NFL is a product like any other product.

All products have some customers who are absolute brand loyal..........some customers who enjoy the product a lot and they might prefer not do without it.........some customers who use the product and enjoy it, but it's not a must and some casual customers that occasionally use the product.

Obviously, many other categories too but the point is, you really want ALL of those customers to use your product at whatever THEIR max volume might be.

If your product is a product that is consumed in some part due to the good feelings associated with that product(at least for some customers), that's important too.

There are hundreds of shows on TV every week that I don't watch. My reason for not watching them isn't because I'm protesting them. It's simply because I'm not attracted to watch them. They don't appeal to whatever mental stimulation requirement I might have to watch the show.

THIS is the part that "protesting doesn't work" people don't get.

I totally agree that protesting almost never works.

The damage here isn't from the active "frick the NFL I ain't watching" crowd. It's from the, "meh, that's not all that fun anymore" crowd and the, "meh, I don't feel like being insulted in person" crowd.

They aren't waking up on Sunday thinking, "I'll show the NFL". They're just not waking up thinking about the NFL at all.

Which from a marketing perspective, is actually worse.

It will be an interesting sociological experiment to observe how they fare once returned to their natural environment.

You're a little early but they'll protest the prison industry then

Not really that complex. Had Trump stayed out of it, like a normal President would have, this would have already passed.

But since Trump got involved, it forced many of his disciples to "take a side" on what was an irrelevant distraction otherwise.

This is true. The ratings were declining prior to the knee thing due to this. The taking a knee just accelerated it

Which makes Goodell's inaction especially egregious.

Absolutely. Imagine a Super Bowl spot? Say a 30 second commercial selling for less than the previous year? Oh shite!!!! Hell if the price stayed the same it would be news.

See, this is where we confuse the far left with normal people. The far left DOES think about this in their world: "I'll show Trump" or "I'll show those imperial swine" - etc.

When the (I hate to evoke Richard Nixon) silent majority gets turned one way, it's hard to turn them back. The NFL should have nipped this in the bud, period. This is toothpaste that can't go back into the tube - at least not easily.

Exactly.

Analyst - "Hey Roger, our product is already losing customers due to a variety of factors, many of which are out of our own control".

Goodell - "True. We need to do our best to ensure we maximize revenue and loyalty with existing customers".

Analyst - "Hey Roger, it would appear that some of your players wish to do something that a solid 25% of your customers will find patently offensive..........they may not all stop watching, but, they're still going to severely dislike what you're players are doing".

Goodell - "Meh, no big deal.......piss off the customers!!!!"

Literally no other business on the planet would choose that route.
