During this time, European bankers were pushing for British involvement, knowing that if the South won, they could finance its Reconstruction which would give them a monetary and political edge within the new Confederacy. In fact, many historians speculate that they may have been involved with John Wilkes Booth and Lincoln's assassination. Lincoln stood in their way by wishing to finance Reconstruction with government "greenbacks", money issued by the federal government which had no interest attached. And this was foiling the bankers' plan for gaining political leverage and personal enrichment.

Wreck - are you sure about Lincoln's personal opinion? I have read that some remarks show he had no quarrel with slavery.

You are actually correct. Lincoln was a typical politician and seemed to be on both sides of the fence sometimes. It is easy to assume he was in strong opposition to slavery, but that is far from the truth. I guess he appears to be against slavery because he was for limiting its expansion in new territories.

This Wikipedia article is actually a good summary on the subject - Abraham Lincoln

At the end of the war about 3,000+ Confederates/Southerners exiled to Brazil. The town became known as Americana or something similar. Saw the documentary a couple years ago. The town, to this day, still celebrates its Southern roots with a festival. Also, the town is home to the largest Confederate Vet cemetery outside of the Southern, U.S.

And Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard was a local boy, and Davis died in New Orleans.
Yet slave owner Jackson gets to stay?

Brazil was the last country in the Western world to abolish slavery.

I mean, you just can't make this stuff up.

They sure liked themselves some slavery...following it to the last piece of dirt on earth.

In 1888, Brazil abolished slavery without a war, without 600-800,000 dead, and without military occupation and reconstruction. As a result, they have better race relations today.

The North had 21 million people and the south about 9 million, of which about 4 million were slaves.

Smith and Wesson offered the first cartridge revolver during the civil war, in .22 short, and some officers actually carried one. I guess it was in case they had a bad class of clogged nose, cause that's all it could handle.

Again, as was stated in the last thread on that topic, my first paternal ancestor in the US was a half-black/half-Basque man from Martinique. Fought for the 10th Louisiana (one of the weird Confederate groups that was largely made up of foreigners and mercenaries). I have the documentation.

ETA: My fact, in addition to the above, is that the Pope referred to Jefferson Davis as the 'Honourable President of the Confederate States of America' in a letter.

The Confederacy's Secretary of State was Jewish.

I'd imagine Benjamin was the highest ranking non-Christian in America until the 1950's.

It was illegal to enlist blacks before March 13, 1865.

For some pathetic reason you hear this black rebel soldier thing over and over.

There is no even anecdotal record of black rebel soldiers engaging federal sokdiers, nor do their names appear on muster rolls or pay records.

The war was NOT initiated to end slavery. Lincoln wanted the southern states to pay a 40% tariff on its exports to the Union. The southerners said no because it was unconstitutional to pay federal taxes on exports, and they were right and refused to pay. It went down hill from there.

Is this thread only for the one in the 1860's, or are we including the one that's coming?
