I'm a bit of a history buff, so hopefully this is fun. I'll start us off. Portions of Arizona and New Mexico were annexed by the CSA. Mesilla was established as the capital after Confederate forces won the Battle of Mesilla. The farthest west battle fought in the Civil War was the Battle of Picacho Pass, fought 50 miles northwest of Tucson to help establish Tucson as the Arizona Territory capital.

Wilmer McLean owned a home at the 1st battle of the Civil War (Manassas/Bull Run) and a cannonball went through his house

He moved away to another town in Virginia to try and get away from the war....that town was Appomattox Courthouse. Lee and Grant negotiated the terms of ending the war in his living room

More men died in the Civil War than any other American conflict, and two-thirds of the dead perished from disease.

Only 1/3 of soldiers possessed a functioning weapon. I just made that up.

at New Orleans? I believe you

I once saw some actual pages from the diary kept on the Lewis and Clark expedition. L or C's (I forget which one) biggest concern was the diarrhea the local foods were giving his men.

It was one of the first wars to be photographed and the photographers often posed the corpses for more dramatic effect.

At one point in WWI the Russians were so badly equipped that Russian soldiers were ordered to clap their hand loudly in battle so the Germans would think they had guns

Senator John J. Crittendon of Kentucky had two sons who became major generals during the Civil War—one for the North and one for the South

I've also been watching American gods and there is a story from mr. Nancy - anansi the trickster spider god- that causes a slave revolt.

Whatever the horrors of slavery were...the horrors of the myths of the after life for an African must have been truly awful.

I always wondered if you were forced into slavery why wouldn't you kill yourself and your children. And the best answer I ever got was from a doctor from the Sudan- that their version of "hell" was worse. Far worse.

The Union didn't see the cause of ending slavery as their primary driver in the war. Their purpose was to hold the union together. The Emancipation Proclamation wasn't signed by Lincoln until 1863, three years after the war began.

Abraham Lincoln was personally against slavery, but in his first inaugural, he made it clear that placating the Southern states was more important. Quoting himself in other speeches, he said, "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."

Both armies were all volunteer in the first year of the war. Southern armies during the first year of the war were about equal in numbers to the Yankee armies. Yet the North had a population of almost 21 million compared to the Southern population of 9 million with 5.5 million free and 3.5 million slaves.

Roughly equal armies but the North had an almost 4-1 military population to draw from. And oh by the way, over 2/3 of free Southern population did NOT own slaves.
