can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

The Shins from Point of Morrow

"No Way Down"

The son of a government man
And a pillar of salt
I was born with blood on my hands
And have all the signs of a bleeding heart

Living high on a giant hawk
On a mountain so steep
Keep your head in a hollow log
As the ruling fog are about to creep

What have we done?
How'd we get so far from the sun?
Lost, lost in an oscillating phase
Where a tiny few catch all of the rays

Out beyond the western squalls
In an Indian land
They work for nothing at all
They don't know the mall or the layaway plan

Dig yourself a beautiful grave
Everything you could want
Maybe those invisible slaves
Are too far away for a ghost to haunt

What do we charge?
Letting go of a claim so large
Oh, all of our working days are done
But a tiny few are having all of the fun

Get used to the dust in your lungs

Is there no way down
From this peak to solid ground
Without having our gold teeth
Pulled from our mouth

Make me a drink strong enough
To wash away this dishwater world they said was lemonade
Walk with me after the show
Maybe we can find a way through the minefield in the snow

What are they charged?
Letting go of a claim so large
Oh, all of our working days are done
But a tiny few are having all of the fun

Apologies to the sick and the young
Get used to the dust in your lungs

---------------------------------

Although, I don't agree with the political slant, I can appreciate the lyrics. It does make on think...

Aaron Lewis "Country Boy"
Possibly too simplistic for some..
"Now two flags fly above my land
that really sum up how I feel,
one is the colors that fly high and proud
the red, the white, the blue..
the other one's got a rattlesnake with a simple statement made
Don't tread on me is what it says and I'll take that to my grave,
because..this is me..
I'm proud to be American and I'm strong in my beliefs, ..
and I've said it before but I'll say it again
cause I've never needed government to hold my hand,
and I've said it before but I'll say it again
cause my family's always fought and died to save this land..
and a country boy is all I'll ever be...

"With God On Our Side"

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And the land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns on their hands
And God on their side.

The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

The irony is Joni never made it to Woodstock. But, she was talking we in the metaphoric sense.

America, where are you now?
don't you care about your sons and daughters
don't you know, we need you now
we can't fight alone
against the Monster

People say I'm no-good,
And crazy as a loon.
I get stoned in the morning,
I get drunk in the afternoon.
Kinda like my old blue tick hound,
I like to lay around in the shade,
An', I ain't got no money,
But I damn sure got it made.

'Cos I ain't askin' nobody for nothin',
If I can't get it on my own.
If you don't like the way I'm livin',
You just leave this long-haired country boy alone.

Preacher man talkin' on the TV,
He's a-puttin' down the rock 'n' roll.
He wants me to send a donation,'Cos he's worried about my soul.
He said: "Jesus walked on the water,"And I know that is true,
But sometimes I think that preacher man,
Would like to do a little walkin', too.

Really a shame what happened to CD. He's gone from a countercultural country rocker to a 'Murica redneck hack. He did an updated version of Long Haired Country Boy in the nineties after he got born again, taking out the drug and alcohol references.

Grateful Dead - Playin in the Band

quote:

Some folks look for answers
Others look for fights
Some folks up in treetops
Just look to see the sights

But I can tell your future
Look what's in your hand
But I can't stop for nothing
I'm just playing in the band

Cake - Nuggett

Now heads of state, who ride and wrangle
Who look at your face, from more than one angle
Can cut you from their bloated budgets
Like sharpened knives through chicken mcnuggets

They are nearly as deluded about the importance of these songs as the songwriters.

War ,it ain't nothing but a heartbreaker.
War ,it's got one friend & that's the undertaker.

Alan Jackson "Where were you when the world stopped turning"

quote:

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out with pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

[Chorus:]
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell
You the difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love

The Judds "Grandpa tell me bout the good ol days'

quote:

Grandpa
Everything is changing fast.
We call it progress,
But I just don't know.
And Grandpa, let's wonder back into the past,
And paint me a picture of long ago.

Did lovers really fall in love to stay
Stand beside each other come what may
Was a promise really something people kept,
Not just something they would say and then forget
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away
Whoa oh Grandpa,
Tell me 'bout the good old days.

Joni Mitchell
2007

About her loathing of modern music industry, calling it a cesspool.

"I retired ten years ago, I got turned off of music. I wont go into it because you will ask me, well don't you like so and so and don't you like?, and I don't want to diss on people.
I just didn't like music. It's becoming degenerate, its all look at me. It's made a dog race out of music. It was all synthetic. How long can you enjoy hos and criminals.I mean when it's a sub culture, it's interesting but when the sediment rises to the top, it starts to destroy culture.

She did another interview that I can't find about when sub cultures overtakes mainstream culture in a society that shows that civilization is in a decline.
Joni is an artist first in whatever medium she uses so it isn't surprising that this is her opinion. If one studies history, art history in particular, you notice changes in art, and sub culture influences as a civilization declines.

I got a letter from the government
The other day
I opened and read it
It said they were suckers
They wanted me for their army or whatever
Picture me given' a damn - I said never
Here is a land that never gave a damn
About a brother like me and myself
Because they never did
I wasn't wit' it, but just that very minute...
It occured to me
The suckers had authority
