I appreciate the sentiment of all that but it could never be a favorite of mine because it lacks artistry. It's too darn simplistic and upfront. My favorites have symbolism and metaphor and art.

The title of the song is actually, "Rednecks" -and the chorus is:

quote:
We're rednecks, rednecks
And we don't know our arse from a hole in the ground
We're rednecks, we're rednecks
And we're keeping the n*ggers down

I would have suspected you agree with the politics of the first half of that one (it was satire - the use of the word was ironic), particularly the anti-"redneck" message - perhaps the northern hypocrisy is a little off-putting for you, but I believe the message of the song could be embraced by the community at large.

The Dead Kennedys first album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, was chock full of songs containing political themes. You can't get more political than Kill the Poor, When Ya Get Drafted, Let's Lynch the Landlord, Chemical Warfare, and California uber alles.

Genesis's "Invisible Touch" was my very first CD purchase! I thought it the schnitz. Love that video.

How's this?

Scarborough Fair/Canticle

quote:

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsely, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Also, I didn't think this lacked art-

quote:

Now the high school gymnasium's ready,
full of flowers and old legionnaires.
Nobody showed up to protest,
just to sniffle and stare.
But there's red, white, and blue in the rafters
and there's silent old men from the corps.
What did they say when they shipped you away
to fight somebody's Hollywood war?

-although it is pretty simple and upfront.

Henley appeared to be upset with the Reagan administration.

Reagan drew more public ire than Obama, and he was white.

Weird, I know.

Operation Mindcrime (Queensryche) was a political concept album about the perceived social injustice of the Reagan administration.

3 pages on political songs and no War Pigs? You people disappoint.

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'til their judgement day comes
Yeah!

Now in darkness world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pig's crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
Oh lord yeah!

Here's one in Rex's honor, courtesy of Ugly Kid Joe.

quote:

And I, get sick when I'm around, I, can't stand to be around,
I, hate everything about you!
Everything about you,
Everything about you,
Everything about you!

I started to, but Rex was queefing about "full episodes" - and just wants "acute" whatever.

I started to just post the opening couplet - realized that Ozzy just rhymed "masses" with "masses" and that the whole song was a brilliant political statement and left it at that.

That's a bit of a stretch. It takes place in the Reagan era and features fictional political assassinations but it's much more critical of religion and drug use as a means of mind control.

Ok, the protagonist becomes disillusioned with Reagan era politics, but it's not a slap at Reagan.

Does it make you feel better?

It's not a stretch at all, the whole concept revolved around the religiously tinged politics of the Reagan era.

War! huh-yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh

War! huh-yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y’all

War! huh good God
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

Ohhh? War! I despise
Because it means destruction?
Of innocent lives

War means tears
to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
and lose their lives

I said – War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War! Whoa, Lord …
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
War! It’s an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind

War has caused unrest in the younger generation
Induction then destruction-
Who wants to die?

Ohhh? War Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it, Say it, Say it

War! Uh-huh Yeah – Huh!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! It’s got one friend, that’s the undertaker
War has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled bitter and mean
Life is much to precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can’t give life, it can only take it away

War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War! Whoa, Lord …
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me?

War! It ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
Peace Love and Understanding;
tell me, is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there’s got to be a better way

War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
You tell me
Say it, Say it, Say it

War! Huh Good God y’all
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it.
Nothing!

I protested by posting the whole song. I would like to think even a little protest like mine would make Sabbath proud.
