John Kay- Steppenwolf living under Communist rule, and his escape from East Germany for freedom in West Germany.

Excerpt from Renegade

The devils' curse brought the whole world to it's knees
And it was "Hey you, keep your head down
Don't look around, please don't make a sound
If they should find you now
The Man will shoot you down"

It's a mighty long way out of the darkness
To where the sun is free to shine
Oh! The truck came by to put us in the back
And left us where the railroad tracks cross the line
Then the border guide took us by the hand
And led us thru the hole into the promise land beyond
And I can hear him now
Whispering soft and low
"When you get to the other side
Just run like hell"

Seals and Crofts 1974

Excerpt from Unborn Child

Oh little baby, you'll never cry, nor will you hear a sweet lullabye.

Oh unborn child, if you only knew just what your momma was plannin' to do.
You're still a-clingin' to the tree of life, but soon you'll be cut off before you get ripe.
Oh unborn child, beginning to grow inside your momma, but you'll never know.
Oh tiny bud, that grows in the womb, only to be crushed before you can bloom.

Mama stop! Turn around, go back, think it over.
Now stop, turn around, go back, think it over.
Stop, turn around, go back think it over.

Oh no momma, just let it be. You'll never regret it, just wait and see.
Think of all the great ones who gave everything
That we might have life here, so please bear the pain.

Krista Branch-- I Am America Full Lyrics

Pay no attention to the people in the street,
Crying out for accountability.
Make a joke of what we believe,
Say we don't matter cause you disagree.

Pretend you're kings, sit on your throne,
Look down your nose at the peasants below.
I've got some news; we're taking names,
We're waiting now for the judgment day.

I am America, one voice, united we stand.
I am America, one hope to heal our land.
There is still work that must be done.
I will not rest until we've won.

I am America.

You preach your tolerance but lecture me.
Is there no end to your own hypocrisy?
Your god is power, you have no shame,
Your only interest is political gain.

You hide your eyes and refuse to listen.
You play your games and abuse the system.
You stuff your pockets while Rome is burning.
I've got a feeling that the tide is turning.

I am America, one voice, united we stand.
I am America, one hope to heal our land.
I will not give up on this fight,
I will not fade into the night.

I am America.

You stuff your pockets while Rome is burning.
I've got a feeling that the tide is turning.

I am America, one voice, united we stand.
I am America, one hope to heal our land.
I am America, one voice, united we stand.
I am America, one hope to heal our land.
I will not give up on this fight,
I will not fade into the night.

I am America.

Vietnam war veterans
Yes--Yours Is No Disgrace excerpt

Death defying, mutilated armies scatter the earth
Crawling out of dirty holes, their morals, their morals disappear, yeah

Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face
Caesars Palace, morning glory, silly human, silly human, silly human race
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place
If the summer change to winter, yours is no
Yours is no disgrace, yours is no disgrace, yours is no disgrace

Take the evil out the people, they'll be acting right. 'Cause both black and white are smokin' crack tonight. And only time we chill is when we kill each other. It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other. And although it seems heaven sent, we ain't ready to see a black President, uhh. It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact... the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks. But some things will never change. Try to show another way, but they stayin' in the dope game. Now tell me what's a mother to do? Bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you. You gotta operate the easy way.

Thanks, I will.
I was a fan of Steppenwolf and Yes way back when.
I don't recall many, if any songs supporting Vietnam veterans particularly with all the coverage of My Lai, and such, so for Yes to come out with that song, I thought it should be mentioned.

John Kay's escape from communism to freedom in the west I think should still be remembered.

And Unborn Child is still moving, and thought provoking whatever position one takes.

I only recently discovered Krista Branch but I certainly think she should be included.

My favorite?

It was U2 and Bono (maybe at Red Rocks, can't remember exactly).

Bono is up there, waving his arms saying, "Every time I wave my arms, a little kid in Africa dies."

From the audience: "Then stop doing that, dumbass!"
