There’s no irony. He was very detailed and precise in February when he made the rounds on news media “repeal and replace” because he thought a straight repeal was happening, then he got exactly what he wanted, but in June he was screaming for a straight repeal
He likes to be that guy because it gets him in front of a camera. Too bad he sucks on camera

You have to govern . You just have to or you hand the keys to those who would destroy you . I’ve been making this pragmatic appeal to my ideological friends for 40 years , since Reagan drove the point home. Ideological purity is fine- more power to you- but when you lose sight of the fact that the American system DEMANDS the formation of coalitions to govern you are really engaging in a kind of Conservative Utopia where you convince yourself that losing is good. It’s not . It leads to even worse defeats of the kind that gave us Obamacare in the first place. You strengthen those who would destroy you whether you will admit it or not. And you marginalize your own voice.
The establishment would kiss you on the lips if it could. This is exactly the Pollyanna approach that has allowed for them to take control of you/me/us and our political system.
When you make the rules and control the system, all you need is compromise to keep the wheels greased.
quote:How would we be better off? The establishment would continue to get its way, and you'd be patting Rand Paul on the back for playing along with the game.
And let’s face it - had Rand compromised he could have extracted further concessions and status over the next couple of years that he could have parlayed into his own political coalition instead of remaining in the wilderness. And then we’d all be better off .
Numbnuts, the game is rigged. To compromise is to surrender. Hell, to even play along with the rigged game, is to surrender to it.

Yep . I’ve sent Rand a check. I think he’s be a solid President. But I also understand The absolute necessity of forming imperfect political coalitions in the American system. You have to be able to be pragmatic or you relegate your own argument to irrelevance.
I also think that after eight of years of Leftist Ideological zealotry and the rejection of Paul/ Cruz in the primaries, that the election of Trump was a rejection of the whole politics of Ideological “ purity “. People want Obamacare to go away, if not in one gigantic universal repudiation, then incrementally as the process allows . I think Paul missed his opportunity and I think ironically he marginalized his own argument.

No he only took that position because he was voting “no” on a bill he months earlier claimed he wanted
He read the tea leaves wrong and exposed himself

Bingo. Rand isn't the problem.

Rand Paul is just further proof that we aren't sending our best to Congress. He's a dirtbag.

Yep. They loved Rand when he "obstructed" Obama.
It's not about good policy to them. It's about "winning." They've become Obamabots for Trump.

They've become Obamabots for Trump.
Enjoy your status quo folks.... More of the same. Nothing will ever change. Just too many sheople on either "side."
Ahh, well. It was a good run wasn't it? Hopefully I'll be long gone before this whole thing sinks into Third World status. It's not a matter of if, but when.

Holy shite!
Trump has effectively turned "conservatives" into authoritarian progressives.

You complain about conservatives being anywhere from skeptical to hateful of Rand's intentions as being nothing more than grandstanding by calling them authoritarian Progressives.
See, this holier than thou bullshite is what drove me away from libertarians and Never Trumpers.

At least he's genuine, but I can't imagine any legislative body anywhere working under his particular "all or nothing" approach.
Posted on 10/20/17 at 10:44 am to RogerTheShrubber
Roger - do you understand my argument ? Or do you dismiss me as an “ Authoritarian Progressive “ or “Trumpbot “ ? Just curious about your opinion since I am so in tune with you on things.

So Rand Paul helped the establishment by voting NO, right?

That Paul helped to lock in.

More of the same.
Again, that Paul helped to lock in.
Rand Paul is no better than John McCain. Think about that because its true. You nay agree with Paul's philosophy and not McCain's but in the end the results are the same.
