Today my daughter gets home from school and tells me they watched a movie about a speech something about a dream. I then said was it MLK she says yes. She then ask why blacks had to ride the back of the bus and other Jim Crow laws. Am I overreacting or is this in appropriate stuff for 5 year olds. Things I now have to explain way before I had planned.

I wouldn't say it's inappropriate but I don't think children as young as 5 have their mental faculties developed enough to actually think about the issue rather than repeat what is told to them.

I think it ok to explain it to her at a five year old level. I would suggest that this is no different than questioning about George Washington. Just explain to her that a long time ago people were forced to ride in the back because bad people made them and MLK stood up to those people. Now you can ride anywhere you want because those bad people no longer have power.

I think its over the top, but when you wash brains its easier to start early.

Seriously, Jim Crow laws are nothing to brag about, and that part of history should be taught in school. It just seems Kindergarten is a little early.

Teaching King's message about God, hope, love and turning the other cheek is another thing, however.

I was learning the alphabet and numbers at 5 years old. That seems a bit young for such a topic matter

This was one of the toughest days for me, too. Santa, Stork, Easter Bunny, Rosa... glad it's all in the past.

So that is my take it was ok to watch the speech but my daughter said the teacher explained to them about the Jim Crow stuff. In other words it was not in the speech but was a ad lib by the teacher

Just explain it to her in a way she will understand it. Stupid people did stupid shite that made life hell for other people simply because of the color of their skin.

I'm gonna play the percentages and guess that your kid goes to a public school, in which case you don't have a right to complain about the free education your child is receiving.

Just answer the question and don't over think it.

Jeez.

Get used to it if you want to have intelligent, inquisitive children.

If you want ignorant children, just give them the back of your hand and tell them to shut up and get you another beer.

Don't envy. In my relatively limited interaction with my nieces, it's amazing to see how relatively little they know and how much they want to learn. There doesn't really seem to be a propriety-based schedule for their budding interest in topics.

My recommendation? Start with some old Richard Pryor sketches and finish up with Chappelle's Show. She'll be good to go.

I had a hard time explaining why that isn't still the standard practice to my 5 year old.

Since when is public education free? Property taxes are far from free buddy.
