I am in favor so long as a minority is placed on the new coin.

Personally, I think the nickel should be eliminated as well. Just round the shite up or down the the next 10th.
Are you serious bro? What's happened to critical thinking skills?
Paper US currency lasts on average 5.9 years at which point it's collected and destroyed as unusable.
The average coin, on the other hand remains in circulation for 30 years.
So, you tell me , what would be the advantages of only having to replace money every 30 years as opposed to every 6 years.

I lost that bet.

That's fine IMO. This can be McCain's legislative claim to fame. I hope he spends the rest of his years on this issue. It's a lot safer issue than him trying to undermine every conservative GOP initiative and starting WWIII with Russia.
Go McCain. Show us how to mint some coins.

i will say producing pennies, nickels and dimes is a waste of money, but if you get rid of them how will black people tip their waiters I kid I kid.

I mean, y'all can be sarcastic and condescending all you want, but this is actually a good bill. It's nonsensical that pennies cost more to produce than they are worth,
That may be true, but the issue is priorities. The republic is teetering on the brink of falling apart economically. socially, culturally and morally, but lets focus on how pennies don't make sense.

It is just a step towards a cashless society, which the powers (banks) want.

Can't do that with coins, but with a cashless society it's quite easy.

It's a good bill. Pennies aren't even worth picking up and one dollar bills will last much longer in coin form ( for those people who still use real money )

You dumb or something? It's MUCH MUCH cheaper for us to use coins rather than paper money.
just do paper.

This is just admitting that inflation is becoming too much.
They were making the dollar coin a decade ago. That obviously didn't go well.

McCain is out of his god damn mind BTW talk about getting your priorities in order.
and all the time we hear from these assholes, well $100 billion isn't that much relative to things. but I've heard that about so many things, and it's about what you can get for the money as well.
so with that context, McCain wants to get rid of pennies to save what he would previously describe as "pennies" fricking a-hole

Here is most likely a dumb question. If you pay cash for something that requires a penny to be involved in the change you get back, does the vendor get to keep the extra .01 to .04 or would the price round down which would "help" the consumer? I know we are talking pennies here and I don't really care that much...just curious.
Or maybe all prices would only be able to be in increments of $.05?
Or maybe nothing would change because there are still a ton of pennies in the world to use at this time.

Pennies are terrible. Their only use is to prevent you from getting more pennies. They should have been taken out of circulation years ago. Lincoln is on the $5 bill also, so what is the holdup?
However, this 2012 GOA study determined that it would take almost 15 years to see a financial benefit from switching from $1 bills to $1 coins. It also acknowledges that "the growing use of electronic payments... results in a lower demand for cash and lower net benefit." So, you might have to stretch that out to almost 20 years. There are also private sector cost considerations (vending machines, etc.). I don't like carrying coins, so count me out.

This is a ridiculous thing to be focused on right now, but we do need to get rid of the penny. It's a waste of money to continue making it.

Totally with you on this. This would help save money overall, so it should happen.
They could save a lot more money if they tackled something like our wasteful postal service, but this is still something.

I visited Canada recently and like how they use $1 and $2 coins and dont have pennies and round up.
