John McCain and Mike Enzi Reintroduce The COINS Act To Kill The Penny and Move To $1 Coin

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Mike Enzi (R-WY) today reintroduced the Currency Optimization, Innovation, and National Savings Act of 2017 (COINS Act), legislation that would modernize our currency by moving to a $1 dollar coin, reduce the cost of nickel production and suspend the minting of the penny, which currently costs more than one cent to produce. These money-saving reforms, which have been studied and supported by the non-partisan Government Accountability Office, could generate up to $16 billion in taxpayer savings.
“With our country facing $20 trillion in debt, Congress must act to protect the American taxpayer,” said Senator McCain. “By reforming and modernizing America’s outdated currency system, this commonsense bill would bring about billions in savings without raising taxes.”
“Change can be hard sometimes, but switching to a dollar coin could save our country $150 million a year,” said Senator Enzi. “Our country is in a difficult financial position because we didn’t value the cost of the dollars we spent. We can’t afford to keep that up, and these innovative opportunities are a way to save taxpayer money that is really just being wasted with each new dollar we print and penny we mint.”

I like the idea of eliminating the penny but I'm not too keen about replacing the dollar bill with the dollar coin. I just don't see the value of removing the paper dollar for heavy, bulky coins. It would just give people more incentive to use their debit/credit card for purchases instead of carrying around a bunch of coins.

Important ground breaking work by the King of Cucks.
I guess when you are losing it upstairs you glom on to things that make you feel still relevant.

Which is the point.

Is this all they can do for us today?

I wonder who footed his bill to fly all over Europe last month.

Can we get rid of McCain instead?

Finally!..someone is working on the important issues facing this Republic! We need more people like McCain and Enzi. Maybe if we paid them more and sweetened their benefit packages we could attract more like them?

John McCain is a screw up.

I'm not sure how high this should be on the priority list, but on the other hand, it would OBVIOUSLY save money, and this might be something that both parties could just say "frick it, no reason to bicker on this one, let's get it done" and make a little progress anyway.
Chuck Schumer will probably filibuster though.

They are half-right.
We should have been done with fricking pennies a decade ago.
They cost more to print than they are worth.
The dollar bill/coin thing is BS.
It is just a step towards a cashless society, which the powers (banks) want.

This is overdue, I hope it passes.

I mean, y'all can be sarcastic and condescending all you want, but this is actually a good bill. It's nonsensical that pennies cost more to produce than they are worth, so eliminating that waste seems like a pretty big no brainer. I just wish it wasn't McCain pushing it, I hate having to agree with him on something.

Why cant we just go to paper money? Pocket change is overrated. And the worst part about it is when you get something where the total is $0.01. Who wants $0.99 in change?

I hope it gets to Trump's desk and he calls a press conference and says:
Folks this is all Congress can do...work on the penny!"

You dumb or something? It's MUCH MUCH cheaper for us to use coins rather than paper money.

Should have included the elimination of Daylights Saving Time to this bill

This is stupid. Society has done a good job of governing this on its own with increased use of cards. But as long as we have cash, we need the denomination of the penny for precision in everyday commercial activity.

I can see the value in eliminating the penny production, but how is a dollar coin cheaper than printing bills?
Personally, I think the nickel should be eliminated as well. Just round the shite up or down the the next 10th.
