JIM WEBB: The base of the Democratic party used to be working people, regardless of race, ethnic, or ethnic identity, sexual orientation, et cetera. That was a Roosevelt agenda. That was the Truman agenda. Over time, and I think particularly over the last eight years, the Democratic Party has moved into interest group politics and in many cases white working people have become the whipping post, or were. I think what you saw in this election here is white working people in these rural areas seeing that someone actually was articulating the fact that they had become disenfranchised and they gravitated toward Trump in my view...

What I think has happened, I mention in there from the immigration act of 1965 forward, the ethnic and racial makeup of the country has dramatically changed, but the laws with respect to affirmative action and diversity have not. I mean, the laws were originally designed to help African-Americans move away from what they call the badges of slavery. It was the 13th amendment, a slavery amendment — it expanded to the point where it’s anybody who doesn’t happen to be white was included in these diversity programs. And you see a natural reaction. You know, I mentioned Clay County, Kentucky, the poorest county in America, is 94% white, and wouldn’t if you were in that county with 40 percent poverty rate, wouldn’t you think this is reverse discrimination? ...

Years ago they were talking about how you get the white working vote, and they put pieces of legislation, rather than what I said to them is this isn’t that complicated. They don’t align themselves with the Democratic Party because they don’t think Democrats like them.

White people can't understand what it's like to be poor. I know that's true because they said it on CNN.

He's right, but they don't. They want nothing to do with uncucked whites.

I would have voted for Jim Webb over Trump. The chance of a Jim Webb coming out of the Democratic party primary is 0.0%.

And they would be correct. Democrats are trying to change the demographics of our nation in their favor/in favor of cumulative minorities at the expense of Caucasians in general. Frankly, Caucasians aren't producing enough children to keep pace which is a significant part of the issue both here and in Europe. Our neighborhood is a microcosm of the transformation. Our community is roughly 50/50 black/white with a good many Hispanics but at least 90% of the children are minorities.

Webb was mocked after the debate where he said white students coming from poverty should also be eligible for Affirmative Action. That tells you where the Democratic base is right now.

I think it would be a really savvy move for Trump to reach out to Webb and find him a spot in the cabinet. IMO, that's the very definition of getting "the best people" and it would take away an asset that the Democrats seemingly don't care for.

Its not just the poor white people. Most middle class whites also know that the democrat party is racist against them.

This is spot on. I'd actually concede that some of the backlash from working class whites is a bit ridiculous, but it doesn't change the fact that it is how they feel. Perception is reality, and those folks believe the leadership under the Democratic party has targeted their way of life. Whether that way of life is dated or not is irrelevant - they're going to vote to hold on to the glory days and the Dems completely whiffed on it while Trump's slogan was to "make America great again." Of course that is going to resonate with those people, and those people vote in droves.

Well he's right. Minorities with a lot of pent up angst about white people have overtaken the democrats and are now using the party as a bludgeon against their favorite whipping post demographic.

Nope

Unless he changes his party affiliation to the GOP, he needs to rot on the vine like the rest of the Democrats.

Senator Webb first worked in the Congress during the Ford Administration, stayed on the same job when Carter took over and was SecNav under Reagan.

He's a good man for any position. He really is above party.

He presented the cleverly titled "Webb GI Bill" on his first day as a senator. His other big initiative, a reform of our horrible prison system never gained any steam.

Neither Clinton nor Kerry ever wrote a bill as Senators; Kerry was there what 4 or 5 terms? Sponsoring a bill is not the same as writing it.

Webb would have beat Trump by 200 EC Votes.

To think that we could have had an election of Paul vs. Webb and instead we got Clinton vs. Trump.

I pitched Sen. Webb madly on FB a year ago. "We don't like him! He's not progressive! We want progressives!!"

Navy Cross, Silver Star, 2 X Bronze Stars - Dems can't even fathom that, let alone honor it.

My disclaimer is that I am an FDR democrat. It wasn't hard to down check Clinton of course, she is no Democrat at all and never was.
