quote:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. says president elect-Donald Trump offered him the job of Secretary of Education, but he turned it down for personal reasons.

Falwell told The Associated Press on Saturday that Trump offered him the job last week during a meeting in New York. He says Trump wanted a four- to six-year commitment, but Falwell says he couldn't leave Liberty for more than two years.

Falwell says he couldn't afford to work a cabinet-level job in Washington for longer than that and didn't want to move his family, especially his 16-year-old daughter.

Isn't it out of the norm to publicize this?

Encouraging that Trump wanted a real commitment of four or more years and not a couple of years to pad the resume.

Disappointing if he was actually offered.

Hopefully this is just a stunt to further solidify and consolidate Trump's evangelical support and Falwell was never actually going to get the job.

Why would this be shocking? He runs a successful university, understands the challenges of education and probably would be a breath of fresh air vs the typical political retreads that typically fill these positions. I like the idea of private citizens having a part in govt instead of just a bunch of political hacks.

I'll say this about Falwell, he's not afraid of exposing his students to different ideas. He invited Sanders to speak at Liberty and the audience received him respectfully.

He runs a university that uses outright lies as part of their core science and history curriculum.

I don't want someone who thinks teaching kids that evolution is a lie and that the great flood was a key piece of world history is worth thousands of dollars a semester anywhere near a federal education position.

Because left on their own, many local school boards and individual states would come up with nonsense that makes common core look brilliant by comparison. Go take a look at some of the most popular home schooling curriculum for a glimpse into the nonsense that would arise in many areas.

Just because the government currently blows at educating our youth doesn't mean the alternative wouldn't be worse.

God...education must have really sucked before the DoEd was created.

Oh, that's right...it didn't.

The descent of US education into the shitter ACCELERATED under the DoEd.

It depended entirely on where you lived and who was on your school board, which is the point.

So, the answer for substandard education in isolated areas was to make it suck nationwide...

Ah, liberals. Spreading misery equally.
