Nixon and Kissinger opened up China because there was a rivalry between them and the Soviet Union, and Nixon wanted to drive a wedge between them. Reagan continued the policy. So I'm sure the reason Reagan upheld the "One China" policy was because he didn't want to undermine what he really wanted, which was to exacerbate the Sino-Soviet split.

Nuclear weapons? Albert Hakim was my next door neighbor growing up in California. I have since done some research on it. The Iran contra was very very different than what Obama did.

This. The ongoing cold war with the Soviet Union influenced much of America's foreign policy prior to the Soviet's collapse.

Well nobody expected him to give them billions and also a contractual guarantee that we would not attack them if they continued to build a nuclear program. The engagement was not what most Americans were expecting.

We will not be able to deal with North Korea without the help of China in some fashion.
Pissing them off about the Taiwan thing might make them just say, eff you America, we hope NK nukes Seattle, you Taiwan loving motherfrickers.
That is what could be a big downside here.
China was not going to invade or do anything to Taiwan and Taiwan was not going to do anything to harm mainland China. Dunno why Trump wants to shake things up there.
