Do we get a vote on it?

The only reason to remove statues after 150 years is to stir up trouble.

A lot of the statues have been up way less than 150 years. They were erected during the Jim Crow era. They were a form of intimidation to black residents. A reminder to what their place in society was.

I mean if we're interested in history and all. Or do you just want the whitewashed history of them?

Well thats awesome because it means you can go get it and put it outside your trailer since you hold it in such high value!

Since your position is that the statues should be destroyed and we should forget the whole unpleasant business, just say so. I would disagree with you, respectfully.

Pretending to value the historical value and folks' access to them with your "museum" statement when your actual position couldn't be further from that is disingenuous and fatal to your credibility, IMHO.

How can an inanimate object intimidate anyone?

What in the actual frick??

I'll tell you what, you find where I have posted that I want the statues destroyed buddy. I will not be holding my breath. I personally dont care what happens to the statues. If I were forced to choose, if someone is willing to pay for their storage I'd be glad to see them in museums because they are part of history and hold some aesthetic value.

Id appreciate it if you didn't pull positions clean out of your arse and then attribute them to me.

The better question is what has already been scrubbed from our collective knowledge

Uncomfortable, but timely example:

bbc

How the world loved the swastika - until Hitler stole it

quote:

In the Western world the swastika is synonymous with fascism, but it goes back thousands of years and has been used as a symbol of good fortune in almost every culture in the world. As more evidence emerges of its long pre-Nazi history in Europe, can this ancient sign ever shake off its evil associations?
In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, swastika means "well-being". The symbol has been used by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains for millennia and is commonly assumed to be an Indian sign.

Early Western travellers to Asia were inspired by its positive and ancient associations and started using it back home. By the beginning of the 20th Century there was a huge fad for the swastika as a benign good luck symbol.

quote:

If you want to see just how deeply rooted the swastika pattern is in Europe, a good place to start is Kiev where the National Museum of the History of Ukraine has an impressive range of exhibits.
Mammoth tusk bird figurineImage copyrightMUKTI JANE CAMPION
Among the museum's most highly prized treasures is a small ivory figurine of a female bird. Made from the tusk of a mammoth, it was found in 1908 at the Palaeolithic settlement of Mezin near the Russian border.

On the torso of the bird is engraved an intricate meander pattern of joined up swastikas. It's the oldest identified swastika pattern in the world and has been radio carbon-dated to an astonishing 15,000 years ago. The bird was found with a number of phallic objects which supports the idea that the swastika pattern was used as a fertility symbol.

The Church of St. George (Amharic: Bete Giyorgis?) is one of eleven rock-hewn monolithic churches in Lalibela, a city in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Originally named Roha (Warwar), the historical and religious site was named Lalibela after the King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, who commissioned its construction. He is regarded as a saint by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

quote:

The church was carved from a type of volcanic tuff. This is the sole architectural material that was used in the structure. It has been dated to the late 12th or early 13th century AD, and thought to have been constructed during the reign of King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, of the late Zagwe dynasty

How many were put up coinciding with that generation passing on as a way to remember them?

Look you win. Spike the football. They are coming down. You can smirk and have a party if you like.

I'm not sure why you continue to do battle here. You know they are all coming down as the dem politicians are pushing each other out of the way to be first to bring them down for political points. It's not about removing symbols of hate at this point.

OK Mr Technical, since the war was still going on 150 years ago I doubt the monuments were erected.

The Jim Crow era ran from the 1870's to the 1950's. Of course the monuments were erected in that "era". As to your knowledge of why/ intent, I don't see how you could possibly know that.

Unreal isn't it. A statue in some random park or intersection compared to masked honky's burning a cross in your yard.

Meh. I think you do. You definitely want/wanted them down. You're happy they are not being publicly displayed.

Fair enough, but you know people were clamoring for them - jockeying for them, but Mitch said no, right?

Go to any public school and pick out a 7th grade Social Studies book. That's the only book most will "read" regarding US and world history....where kids see 1 page on George Washington and 4 on Gloria Steinem.

I teach 12th grade world history and this is completely accurate, but I don't teach from the book either :) I pick and choose what I teach and it is from a right wing view I can promise you that. I must be doing something right because my students always make it to the state literary rally and do really well. I had a student ask me one time "why don't I teach about the civil rights?" I just replied, the world dosn't care about the civil rights movement in the U.S.

That truly sucks. Really.

As to the rest of your post, I actually had no opinion on the matter until all this shite came up. Personally it doesn't affect me in the least and part of me is just kind meh on the whole thing. The only reason Ive been posting is to state that I can understand the sentiment from say, the descendant of a murdered slave. Its a public space.
