Confederate symbols should be in museums, cemeteries, and historical parks and NOT in public parks or on state/local government buildings. That's my opinion. Of course people can put those symbols on their private property if they wish.

Why? (1) Because the Confederates fought to destroy the United States of America. (2) Most of those statues were erected as part of an informal program to glorify whites, and segregate blacks in the era 1880-1930. They were erected as acts of defiance and an attempt to whitewash/glorify the old Confederacy.

Yep, this is probably where the country will end up. It's like being against gay marriage, there's really not a great argument against it. Common sense will eventually win out over time.

i have a very honest question for you. why does the south hang on to a horrible part of our history? we were in the wrong and lost but yet we still celebrate it.

This the the exact freaking reason this whole issue still exists. People like the above STILL do not have a damn clue, and if their questions WERE honest, they would FIND the truthful answer and stop hating on people that would seek to preserve that history... moreover, they would understand and agree with keeping it.

So, sir, your question is not fueled by an honest measure at all.

All the statue removals have been voted on and they voted for removal.

The statues have very little to do with the history you try to hide behind.

Any monument to anyone other that John Q Taxpayer should come down or be renamed.

Since we're assuming things about each other's particular angles... perhaps you could say you never supported anyone named Clinton or Obama? Since we're talking about traitors, and said appreciation.

This is an honest question. Do you also support removing Washington, Jefferson etc... What about the U.S. Flag? If you are against the Confederacy symbols but for the others can you explain how you can justify one in your mind but not the other?

I believe the Confederate statues should be taken down and not the ones of Washington and Jefferson, Why?

Washington and Jefferson were slave owners, but that is not the totality of what they are known and celebrated, they're known for the creation of this United States. While what is the Confederacy known for? That it's right for people to go to war to keep Blacks as slaves. If I was black, and I saw my city celebrate a symbol of the Confederacy, I'd be insulted. Because I would rightly ask if my city supported the Confederacy's values. I know a lot of people are going to attack me and say that the Confederacy was about States rights and not slavery, but if you look at any major Confederate document it'll mention the importance of keeping slavery. It's an ugly past that many people are just ignoring. No one likes to think of their ancestor as being the bad guy, but the Confederates were the bad guys.

i have lived in the south my whole life. born in MS, raised in TX and i have lived in baton rouge for 17yrs. Every time i see that confederate flag i know there is an ignorant racist right behind the flag. some call it heritage and i call it a heritage of hate. the confederacy was wrong and should not be celebrated. I had plenty of family that served in the confederacy and no one talks about it. we talk about my grandfather's who served in WW2 and my uncles who served in Vietnam or my cousins who have served in gulf wars. you can hang on to YOUR history but there are a lot of us southerner's who would like to move on.

This isn't really true. They weren't trying to take over the United States they were trying to form their own Union. Pretty big difference.

MLK and a host of other monuments aren't sovereign countries. Should they be removed also?

MLK didn't lead an insurrectionist movement that took up arms against the Unites States in an effort to found his own sovereign state. False equivalence there.

I doubt there any other nations in the world that allow the flags of failed rebellions and insurrectionist movements against them to be flown on government grounds. I'd be interested to know if this actually happens anywhere.

I appreciate the response and don't wholly disagree with some of your points but do you not concede that acts that took place under the Stars and Stripes (namely what we did to the Indians) were far more egregious than anything the Confederacy ever hoped to accomplish?

I think his question was pretty clear. Do you support taking down statues of the Founding Fathers and taking them off of our money? Do you support removing Andrew Jackson from NOLA?

There is no reason you should be for removing Lee and not Washington or Jackson. They all share a common metric.

They'll have to get back to you after MSNBC and CNN tell them what to think about those things.

There was once a time when American citizens used to embrace some of the unique aspects of our grand experiment and experience here.

There was a time 10 years ago when the average liberal would have thought twice about supporting transgender surgery for children.

Times change. Progs march along with each new software update they're given.

Yes, the Native American genocide was much worse. But yet again, you have to look at the totality of the symbols. The Stars and Stripes represent the United States and the concept that all men are created equal, even if we don't always practice it. While the Stas and Bars represent that it's right for Whites to own Black as Slaves. Also the great thing about the United States and the Stars and Stripes is our willingness to learn from the past. Today we acknowledge that we've mistreated Native Americans and Japanese internment camps were wrong. Yet it seems to me that people who wave the Stars and Bars have learned nothing.

Because forgetting about it serves no purpose but to further a very different ideology.

What other history should we erase? I have a few proposals for you...
