Ebola prevention demonstration for medical staff

I just flipped over to the wacko Glenn Beck's new show to see what he's up to, expecting to make fun of him for a crazy tirade. But I was very surprised to be informed. They just did a demonstration with chocolate syrup as the bacteria. They were taking off the preventative gear just as they had been instructed by government regulations, and they had the stuff clearly on them. shite. Something needs to change. Will update with video if they put it you tonight.

well there is a problem. Ebola is a VIRUS

Doesn't matter. It's really really hard to get ebola.

Makes more sense that you though this 'wacko' could, don't he?!?!

Yeah, tell that to the nurses that have gotten it. The preventive measures that need to be taken and the hazmat equipment that needs to be put on take a very, very long time to put on and take off. So much time, in fact, that staff taking care of just one Ebola patient don't have time to take care of another. IF correct protocol is followed correctly. This can all overwhelm a health system very quickly, as Doctors without Borders just found out.

That is why, contrary to CDC recommendations for US Hospitals, the CDC and Emory have observers for donning of PPE, and watching/assisting degowning/decontamination.
As I said earlier, if Frieden is questioned re: PPE required for Ebola work at the CDC vs recommendations it issued for hospital workers, he will be done as CDC Director. No way to justify the differential in protocols his agency generated.

Medical precautions are never perfect, they serve to minimize risk. If you want those who have ebola to get treatment there will always be some risk however small. If you want to remove the risk entirely, isolate the sick and allow them to die alone.
This isn't to say there cant be improvements in precautionary measures, but I get the feeling that many here want to have their cake and eat it to. They want us to treat those who are ill, but scream to high heaven and blame Obama when one of the dozens of workers exposed to them gets ill.

So, is it not true that one can only get ebola by consuming it through the mouth, sexually, or if it gets into eyes, ears, etc? How did Nina Pham get it if all her opening were covered?

Also provide the proper equipment to protect medical staff from getting an infectious disease.
Just listened to a conference call earlier today with a national nurse's association. Over 11,500 nurses listening in. Several nurses from all over the nation and the world speaking up.
Basically....many nurses saying that their hospitals are NOT prepared to deal with ebola. Not providing the appropriate training to staff. Not providing appropriate equipment and protective gear.

That's ridiculous.
If 2 out of 70 is the rate of infection for PPE wearing healthcare workers, I don't want our standard healthcare workers being responsible for the care of these patients.

There is also the need for a totally separate ventilation system. I doubt many hospitals have such isolation rooms.

I think it's true...it's just that you shouldn't take that and assume it means that healthcare workers should easily be able to avoid exposure.

All it takes is direct contact with a break in the skin.
That harmless healing paper cut on your finger...
Now add taking off gloves. Knowing that patient has ebola. They just vomited rivers of blood in your presence. They are having explosive bloody diarrhea. You basically just received a quick crash course in taking all the stuff off properly to prevent you coming into direct contact(or basically reading off what to do off a cdc pamphlet). I would imagine it makes you quite nervous and even more prone to errors.

Why does everyone seem to believe that every hospital in America should be fully equipped for a virus endemic to West Africa which has literally never shown up here before?
Posted on 10/15/14 at 5:11 pm to conservativewifeymom
USA Medical Center here in Mobile has four. The "scare" yesterday was transported to one of the four negative pressure isolation chambers for observation. But, it is a high-level trauma facility that was designated a center of operations in event of a bio-terrorism attack. Don't know how many of these there are around.

I thought you needed separate ventilation systems if the virus was airborne. Why would you need that for a virus that needs at least some sort of contact with fluids or even droplets to infect others?

Just thought y'all would want to know.

They don't need to be.
But don't keep a patient you know that has ebola and expect your staff to care for him if they aren't properly trained for it.
Duncan should have been flown to one of the 4 hospitals that can care for this properly the moment his test came back positive.

Could be anything from a needle stick to the virus getting exposed to a paper cut on her finger. She could have broken protocol and managed to get viral droplets in her mouth right after brushing her teeth and had bleeding gums.
There is really no way to know other than we know it had to have gotten directly into her bloodstream.
