I'll tell you someone else who can be making some money...the folks who still run car ferries across the English Channel.

90 miles from Key West to Cuba is shorter than the Zeebruge-Dover route...no Jones Act to be worried about either...

Americans in new cars can go into Cuba, Cubans with classic American cars can come to the US

The far away dark forested lands of eastern Europe vs the sun baked white sands of a trpoical island 90 miles from Florida are incomparable at best.

You DO remember how freedom was achieved in that song, right?!?!

That's besides the point.

Basically, I saw a perfect opportunity to use that chorus which, to be honest, doesn't happen much in daily conversation.

Why all the posts about people going to Cuba? For what is being reported they are not removing the tourist travel ban?

You don't see tourism expanding, jobs created, and the services of the internet eventually defeating communism?

Think about the long run. There will be a huge economic development in Cuba. Casinos will open up (major reason for the start of the embargo), resorts will be established, and cigars will be cheap.

Ya - to say nothing will change is short sighted.

I expect an explosion of growth in Cuba - and Cubans will benefit.

Not as much as they would if their government was different, but they will benefit.

A long way to go for any progress, really. But I think once the domino gets pushed it'll be over. Conservatives on this board should put pressure on their legislatures to end the embargo, which has done jack shite but strengthen an authoritarian government and kept us from habanos.

This. We should just go ahead and make them a state or territory. Both sides would profit.

ETA: Of course we would have to move Gitmo in a hurry!

Before the Civil War, there was a lot of talk of annexing Cuba as a slave state if California was given statehood as a free state (due to the fact that California straddles the Missouri Compromise line which was supposed to determine which territories could become free or slave states depending on location relative to that line)

There should never have been an embargo in the first place.

Well, time for me to quit my practice and buy a few flats skiffs for the southwestern part of Cuba. I am about to become a bonefish guide. Awesome!

The Cuban government still heavily, heavily restricts things like restaurants where a profit could be turned.

That will need to change drastically in order for Cuba to be a true tourist destination.

However, I could see the cruise ships and mega resorts pouring in and changing that drastically. I would love to go to Cuba.

Like we need more tropical beaches and such.... Give it a few years, the novelty will wear off, and it will be back to poverty....

There's already a tourist industry infrastructure because it's a popular spot for Europeans and Canadians
