Furthermore, he made himself investigator, judge, and jury on Clinton's email scandal.
There was a panel of investigators who determined there was no crime committed. Comey offered his commentary which was unusual. Never got to a "judge and jury" thing.

We both know that's not true

Competence isn't some determinative factor in this administration

I don't think many people actually read the statement, or if they did, didn't digest what it said.

Comey said so in his statement. If he did publicly state it, he would have had to also publicly state Trump was under investigation if their investigation lead to that. It does sound like Comey was trying to protect Trump a little there, but we can question whether that was genuine or not.

Comey seems to frequently find himself in the awkward spot of straddling a line of what he can/should say. At some point, he decided he was important enough to make those decisions even in the opposition to the truth.

He should have just been open and honest. We'd all have been better off in both the Clinton case and this one. Instead, he has been intentionally misleading...probably as a means to maintain power.

Which he wasn't...

Trump was told 3 times in private he wasn't under investigation so why not say it public? The reason was Comey did this to try and keep his job. No way Trump would fire him if the public believes he might be under investigation (Comey thinking)
What? If you are basing this on the today's released statement, then this is directly addressed in it:

Comey Statement
quote:

On the morning of April 11, the President called me and asked what I had done about his request that I “get out” that he is not personally under investigation. I replied that I had passed his request to the Acting Deputy Attorney General, but I had not heard back.
quote:

I said the White House Counsel should contact the leadership of DOJ to make the request, which was the traditional channel.
quote:

I said only that the way to handle it was to have the White House Counsel call the Acting Deputy Attorney General. He said that was what he would do and the call ended.
So he was playing politics because he referred Trump to the normal procedures? Wouldn't that be the opposite of political?

Trump definitely didn't understand the significance of your original point. It's one of the key pieces of information in this statement. Trump clearly didn't understand that Comey saying publicly he wasn't under counter-intelligence investigation was a bad idea, because that could have changed as you pointed out.

Comey was really between a rock and a hard place. The guy you're talking to can't wrap his head around why you don't want to do something so he fires you, and expects the investigation to just go away. At the end of everything, you can't deny Trump looks pretty dumb.

You don't go to the public with information that could change at any point. And I'm not sure why Trump would want to hear Comey say publicly "Trump is currently not under investigation, but that could always change, depending on the facts and testimony we unearth".

If what Comey says is true, it does seem like he was fired because trump wanted some public statement that he was not under investigation. He was repeatedly asked to do this by Trump and it never happened. Comey's reason for not doing it and asking advice from the deputy AG makes sense. It seems that Trump just got fed up with Comey not making a public statement and canned him.

If he really fired him for his handling of the Clinton email investigation, he would have been fired sooner because that was already known and why would Trump waste so much time meeting with a guy he knew he would fire?

The idea Trump fired Comey over the Clinton emails is so absurd it's not even laughable. Comey simply wouldn't publicly exonerate Trump and that's why the axe fell amongst other reasons.

this

Trump wanted "Muh Russians" to disappear so he could be a president without all this fake news drama

Comey didn't oblige

Axe'd

That would be like having a girl say that you raped her publicly, but privately she'd be like "it's cool, I don't really think you did it" .... "so why don't you tell people that? ..... "nah...."

Comey SHOULD have been fired for allowing this campaign of lies and innuendoes to go on against a man that was not under investigation.

Obvious damage was being done to Trump and Comey let it go on for no valid reason. None.

He was protecting Trump from a comeygate style scenario, whereby after publicly announcing there was no investigation (an already unusual move), in response to an allegation or piece of potential evidence, he would then have to announce they would be looking at the evidence to see if an investigation needed to be opened - which to the media is investigation per se.

At least that's what his written testimony says. It's consistent with previous actions but underwhelming as an explanation.

What did Flynn and Manafort retroactively register as foreign agents for? Who paid Carter Page? Why is Flynn also being investigated by the Pentagon, both houses of congress and the courts in two separate states? Why is manafort taking millions of dollars from Russian interests in Ukraine just before ... nah frick it you'll just call me a cuck or blame the media.

Comey was fired because he was a participant in the illegitimate undercutting of a Presidency.

His handling of the question, "Is Trump under investigation?" was horrible at best.
