You don't think that it's a big deal that the two largest American cities with the nations most strict gun laws are at all time lows for violent crime?

bro pretty much every city is at "all time low" crime rates right now...except Chicago

Well, like SFP said, it's been trending that way for some time now, which is why the Chicago story is noteworthy.

Comparing salt lake to other American cities of any size? Ok.
Yeah, comparing a big city with some random town of 500 people in South Dakota is an apples to apples comparison.

I'm a homeless man & the name of my walking city is Crazy Town....population 1

Yesterday I killed myself. The murder rate in my city is 100%, the highest in the nation

You aren't making my brain hurt. You made me confused because this topic has nothing to do with obama being from Chicago. It has to do with seeing a ridiculously awful outlier and wondering why. You are the only one that thinks it isn't a political discussion and then try to defend the epic violence numbers which is a weird thing to do in itself

this is why I think it's a bit disingenuous to claim Chicago's gun laws play a major role in the increase in violence.

Doesn't this mean other cities, which have more restrictive laws, have decreasing murder rates?

Disclaimer: I don't support strict gun control

well i didn't make that claim

i think it's the Ferguson Effect and a police response of backing off due to the issues they've had in response to some local incidents

It means that whenever you heavily restrict something, it creates a lucrative black market for capitalists to fill the void. You end up with more guns in the hands of the wrong people in this instance.

I know you didn't, but it seems to be a commonly held belief on here.

Intentionally dense?

You're seemingly incapable of grasping why population size matters. You're either dumb, or are intentionally playing dumb so that you don't have to admit your argument is stupid and void of logic.

The numbers are per 100,000 population. That normalizes the stats. And the statement was that you can compare salt lake to a small city or a large city and it has a higher violent crime rate on average than everywhere else. It's higher than NYC. It's higher than LA. It's higher than El Paso. It's not higher than Detroit or New Orleans, but on average it's higher. Get It?

Chicago doesn't eve. Have the most restrictive laws.

Again, there are some cities with equally or even harsher gun laws that have a long-term decreasing murder rate. How do you explain that?

Police and city officials have lamented the flood of illegal guns into the city, and the crime statistics appeared to support their claims: Police recovered 8,300 illegal guns in 2015, a 20 percent from the previous year.

The dramatic rise in shootings and murders might not be a "gun control law" issue but these numbers prove no one over there is listening to those dumb laws

Maybe most of the murderers from those cities attacked each other & killed that line of DNA & Chicago is catching up to them

Hypothesizing just like you guys & the conclusion doesn't come easily.
Sanctuary cities hiding killers part of the problem? Not sure
