No it doesn't. Not even close.

Did you bother to compare it to other cities?

You used Salt Lake in a conversation about murders, and linked to data showing only 8 murders in Salt Lake...

It's certainly a big deal if you live in Chicago. If you live in Louisiana you should be more worried about your own backyard. Either way I don't see it as a national political issue that should overly concern a Louisiana centric audience to the extent that it does.

Yeah that's part of the reason why I was asking him what his angle was

Without looking I'd guess they had lower crime in the 90's than now.

i'll take that bet

And other cities in the Midwest (Detroit, flint, St. Louis, etc) have all stayed high as well.

Flint doesn't have much easily-accessible data b/c it's not really a major city, but i'll keep looking

our violent crime rates, across the country, are a major story for a bunch of reasons

one city, a super major one at that, suddenly and shockingly showing a major reversal in this trend, is noteworthy

From the website I linked.

quote:

With a crime rate of 106 per one thousand residents, Salt Lake City has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 9. Within Utah, more than 100% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Salt Lake City.

It concerns me personally because I travel to Chicago multiple times a year and just went again in October

Also how in the hell do you think this is not a political issue?

It's important to know the reasons behind the spike in murders so that your own city could prevent it from happening there.

You don't see the big deal with a major American city boasting one of the most strict gun control policies (laws that liberals want to replicate nationally) having a huge spike in firearm related murders?

It's noteworthy because Obama is from Chicago. That's all this has been about.

Well, it's important to study these trends, outcomes, laws, and other factors as to not repeat the same mistakes as Chicago here in your backyard

I bet if Mr. Obama ran for mayor of Chicago, the gun violence would drop to zero.

They wouldn't want to disappoint Mr. Obama.

You don't think that it's a big deal that the two largest American cities with the nations most strict gun laws are at all time lows for violent crime?
