Seriously would you be OK with our rounding up folks and shooting them simply because we suspect them of being terrorists without enough evidence to try them as such??? That would be a scary fricking world my friend because once a nation with the power we have starts doing that kind of shite there is no telling who or what we may refocus those efforts on next....

I believe a few actually have their guilt in doubt from reports I've seen. At least in the past.
However you always have to be dubious of any report giving you the full story.

Strawman.

Those have been long released under Bush. The remaining ones are there for a reason.

Strawman.
So you don't what that term means, do you?
I will help you out....
"an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument."
As you can see nothing about my question fits that definition...but I am sure some of your equally ignorant friends find it amazing that you know such a word exists even though you clearly have no idea what it means...

Correct. And how does that not apply to your post that I responded to?

Now he just needs to pardon all the non violent drug offenders.

Love it when they actually take the time to look it up and then still don't understand it.

You're conflating civilian crimes with acts of war. POTUS cannot pardon them, if thats what you were getting at.

Yet there are still federal inmates doing time for marijuana.

It is amazing...especially when the comment that fueled it was a "just throw it out there" comment.

You are the one who said it did...provide some evidence...

It's in your own words.
You claimed that:
quote:
would you be OK with our rounding up folks and shooting them simply because we suspect them of being terrorists without enough evidence to try them
That has nothing to do with the specifics of the situation at GITMO. You're making an argument against "just rounding people up and shooting them with no evidence or trial"
No one claimed that and it has nothing to do with the enemy combatants at GITMO.

I was responding to this post:
"Meh ... just shoot them and drop them in the ocean. Fish gotta eat, too."
To which I replied:
"would you be OK with our rounding up folks and shooting them simply because we suspect them of being terrorists without enough evidence to try them"
Which most assuredly applies to at least some of the people being held at GTMO who are not guilty of anything other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time...most have never even been charged with any kind of crime and almost none remaining have a set trial even after being detained for more than 10 years. That is the specifics of the situation at GTMO...we went around the world rounding up people, some who are demonstrably not guilty of anything at all, and the poster that I was originally responding to suggested that they all be shot and tossed in the ocean...thus doing so, as I said, with "no evidence or trial".
So, another person posted a hypothetical solution to the GTMO issue and I asked a question about that hypothetical solution based on the facts as they exist at GTMO...there is no way that I presented a strawman argument as you claim because I did not misrepresent anything...the fact is that we rounded people up and have held them without trial or enough evidence to try them and the original poster said he would be ok with shooting them...and I asked if he was truly OK with that.
I know it sounds smart to toss out words like strawman but when you don't know what they mean it really makes you sound less than smart....or maybe you know and were merely being dishonest??

Obama promised to close GITMO in 2008.
