They don't have to build them if they don't want to. But it would better to make for example the break rooms in those designated areas stronger like a safe room. Employees need a place for safety just in case of a natural disaster or a state of emergency.

So, we’re not going to provide for your safety, and you aren’t allowed to provide for your own safety. Nobody has a problem with this?

The reason they weren't allowed to leave is because they don't want to be held liable for them. If they leave they are terminated on the spot. But I would have allowed them to clock out and leave the property and once that done then the facility will not be responsible for any death in any natural disaster.

Sometimes an employee doesn't have a choice but to stay because they don't have enough time to escape an impending tornado.

They’re providing for their safety. They’re not providing for their safety to the extent that you would like. I suspect they followed all the building codes and OSHA regs.

When I worked in manufacturing the company I worked for went above and beyond the OSHA regular regulations. They were willing to spend millions to not have a bad name for employee deaths.

Good for you but I can promise you the company you worked for was an outlier and not the norm

That depends on how fast and cheap they want the warehouses built.

That I would like? I don’t know any of these people, but I know they are fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. I know that other people’s lives depend on them coming home from work. We know that the bulk of the posts here are terribly concerned about the impact requirements like these would cause, and damn few seem to have considered the impact of a kid no longer having a father or mother.

Some defied the manager and left anyway. They were the lucky ones.

Common sense for most storms, but this thing was a supercell and had pretty much been on the ground for over 100 miles already.

So you want a precedent that forces all business owners who build new buildings to include storm shelters for their employees? Are you a small government proponent as well?

Also well stocked panic rooms in case of a terrorist attack.

You're not providing for their safety if the building codes and OSHA regs don't protect employees above a EF3 tornado. I think it's a moral responsibility at that point IF YOU have the FUNDS to do it.

Alabama has built a bunch of community storm shelters. They're 10 x 48 feet and have a capacity of 96 people. They also cost between $50K to $100K.

Amazon has 110 warehouses in the US. That would be around $11 million dollars for the higher end shelters. Amazon makes more than that in a day. That's why I see this particular issue as murder. They may not be murders by law, but they are in my judgement.

There's this whole "free will" thing that makes me call BS about them "not letting" people go home that have been off the clock. Did they hold them at gun point? If not then all they did was advise them not to leave because going out in the storm is more dangerous.

You have MUCH more of a chance getting killed by debris from driving than having a large building sustain a direct hit from a tornado.

You realize that no one can predict the exact path of a tornado right? Please tell me you realize that....

So now we are shutting down all commerce in every area where there’s an elevated risk of severe weather in the next sixty minutes?

Well, yeah.

so....it's your belief that we should completely shut down all commerce over multiple states whenever there's a threat of severe storms.

...that might not be what you actually believe but that is what your logic would lead to.

I was trying to point out absurdity by being absurd.

On one hand, it's entirely too much of a hardship to expect or require a business owner to do a single thing to provide for the safety of their employees.

On the other hand, it's oh hell no, you can't leave and provide for your own safety either, we'll fire your arse. And we can't have a work stoppage for every storm that pops up.

Am I the only one who gets visions of slaves chained to a boat, being told to work harder as the storm rages?

It's like gun free zones. We aren't going to do a damn thing to provide for your safety and security, and we'll throw your arse in prison if you try to do it yourself.

ETA: My point was that you wouldn't have to shut down and all that, if you provided a safe place for your employees to go for 30 minutes while a tornado warned storm passed.
