Landrieu speech

quote:

Another friend asked me to consider these four monuments from the perspective of an African American mother or father trying to explain to their fifth grade daughter who Robert E. Lee is and why he stands atop of our beautiful city. Can you do it? Can you look into that young girl's eyes and convince her that Robert E. Lee is there to encourage her? Do you think she will feel inspired and hopeful by that story? Do these monuments help her see a future with limitless potential? Have you ever thought that if her potential is limited, yours and mine are too? We all know the answer to these very simple questions.

Blah blah.

I don't plan to spend any money in New Orleans after this.

She needed to learn at some point. Why not from her family?

I don't have a dog in the statue fight.
But this overly emotional nonsense makes my teeth itch:
quote:

Can you look into that young girl's eyes and convince her that Robert E. Lee is there to encourage her?

Many statues exist--simply as reminders of days and events gone by.
They're not all intended to encourage young girls.

Can you look in that young girl's eyes and tell her she can't ever succeed because of a hunk of rock carved to resemble a guy who's been dead for over 150 years?

Trying to think of a time I used a statue to teach my kids a lesson.

I truly and sincerely hope everyone who's threatening to boycott NO over the monument removal follows through. Our problem these days is not a lack of visitors, but a surfeit** of them. So please, stay in Bunkie or Shreveport or wherever.

** For you products of Louisiana school systems, "surfeit" means "shite load".

" no matter what, remember this sweetie.... if you ever fail at anything, it's always someone elses fault... you're perfect"

this strategy has worked out wonderfully for the 90s-00s babies....

Say away from New Orleans. Lots of crime, corruption and race baiting politicains.

Bad place.

That little girl will also be intruduced to the civil war in books in school

Should those be removed as well?

It was a statue of a historically significant event. Instead of removing it they should have added plaques or other statues to explain the other side of the story.

The quoted price isn't even the best part, just the least arguable (I thought). You guys truly have zero perspective. ZERO.

Well, repair and reopen the pool at Audubon.

Cease allowing Krewes to parade in Orleans Parish

Close the Civil War museum

Remove monument from Jackson Square and rename the area

This is fricking stupid. You use it to teach a lesson about the past. You can't sanitizer the past to make people feel good
