Wonder what that father will say to his daughter as they see the chalk outline in the street.

Great. That's history. We learn about the holocaust in school. That doesn't mean the Germans keep Nazi monuments on the streets.

I don't know. No one gaf about them before Landrieu came along. And his reign was preceded by 16 years of world class race baiting.

Many statues exist--simply as reminders of days and events gone by.
They're not all intended to encourage young girls.

Teach her to cast off her chains of oppression and being controlled by her community by not being afraid of some dead white guy from 150 years ago. Learn what lessons you can from the old dude and move on.

Don't let guilt limit your life. The statue only has power over you if you let it.

Hell, I'm not even quite sure how one would do that.

Other statues that may not "help her see a future with limitless potential:"

Homeless Jesus - Austin, TX (of course)
quote:

The sculpture depicts a bronze figure laying on a park bench under a blanket. The face and body are covered, but the feet are exposed and display the markings of the nail-pierced feet of Jesus. Many people are emotionally moved by the statue, which is ‘meant to raise awareness of the marginalized.’

Impaled Alligator -New York, New York

The Awekening - Washington DC

A crime ridden, tax leeching New Orleans and a race baiting, pandering piece of shite like Mitch Landrieu truly deserve each other.

Robert E. Lee is an American Hero, and should be revered by all as a man of integrity.

I say that as someone who is the opposite of a fan of the confederacy and what they stood for.

Oddly enough, my opinion of Lee has been greatly influenced by Ulysses S. Grant's opinion of Lee.

Both are worthy of our admiration and respect, and both men vital to the development of our great country.

Like I said before. This is only the beginning. DC monuments will be next. Libs will set the sights on Lee's stained glass in the National Cathedral next.

I am somewhat ambivalent about the statues but that was, without question, as fine a speech as I have heard from any big city mayor. If only our president was half as eloquent. Downvote away!

Another friend asked me to consider these four monuments from the perspective of an African American mother or father trying to explain to their fifth grade daughter who Robert E. Lee is and why he stands atop of our beautiful city. Can you do it? Can you look into that young girl's eyes and convince her that Robert E. Lee is there to encourage her? Do you think she will feel inspired and hopeful by that story? Do these monuments help her see a future with limitless potential? Have you ever thought that if her potential is limited, yours and mine are too? We all know the answer to these very simple questions.

Here is the answer Mitch..
"Sweetie, even with all these statues standing all over the South, and bad, bad white people holding us down 150 years ago, Barak Hussain Obama, a black man, just became President of the United States...twice...and you too can do anything you can put your mind to.
If that race baiting piece of shite, who never held a real job in his community organizing life, became the most powerful man in the world, you've got the future by the arse....These old white fart statues are just monuments to what we overcame...protect them with ypur life...they are a testament to strength and perseverance!

I do believe Mitch Landrieu's courageous course in purging New Orleans of the repressive memories of the villainous South will reap attractive dividends, in the form of a more just, verdant and peaceful city.

I truly and sincerely hope everyone who's threatening to boycott NO over the monument removal follows through. Our problem these days is not a lack of visitors, but a surfeit** of them. So please, stay in Bunkie or Shreveport or wherever.

Man, I totally agree. New Orleans has more tourists than ever. Super crowded. You can't get near some places anymore without waiting in line. I'd love to see the number reduce a bit.

And, people who are going to stay away from the city over this have their priorities in the wrong place anyway. I won't miss them.

honestly, both fricking sides of this statue thing are crazy... i mean, in the grand scheme of life, does it REALLY make a difference, on a personal level, to you?

for those supporting them, is life really going to be that much worse because you don't have the statue there anymore? for those opposing them, is life going to be that much better because they aren't there anymore?

i just don't get why pieces of metal and concrete, fashioned into an historical person's likeness has BOTH sides so up in arms... at the end of the day, you are wasting so much of the 1 life you have worrying over the dumbest shite possible...

I hope you are fricking kidding....hasnt made a shits difference since they came down, and it wont....
Go read up PGT Beauregard and what he did after the war, and for the city of NOLA and than justify for me why his monument was removed....you cant.

That's a pretty dumb argument.

Does a Big Gulp at 7-Eleven help her see a future with limitless potential?

There's a million other things besides a piece of old stone that blocks limitless potential (which doesn't exist)...mostly living human beings and said human being herself.

Stop drinking Mountain Dew...that would be more worthwhile and inspiring than tearing down an old statue that has no bearing on her life.
