This could be someone that wanted to retaliate the Confederate statues being removed by defacing a monument that represented ending slavery.

It isn't a national debate. It's a wedge issue manufactured by Democrats. They kicked the ant hill to exploit division so they have "issues" to scare people into donating to their mid term campaigns.
They don't care what this does to communities or to racial division.
