Lee is grossly overrated as a general. he -never- had any decisive successive success in war. Ever.
In fact, he decisively hurt the rebel cause by his conduct of operations during the period where he typically gets the most kudos. That would be the Chancellorsville campaign. Apparently most of you neo-rebs are not very familiar with that campaign. In Lee's Lieutenants D.S. Freeman tells us that during that period, Lee's army lost 238 field grade officers. You probably don't know what that is. Field grade officers are majors, lieutenant colonels and colonels. The officers who make combat operations go.
So driving off the tactically inept Hooker in May actually weakened - fatally weakened - the insurgent cause in July.
Right? Because -nothing- went right on the Gettysburg campaign. Did it? Just thousands and thousands more dead laid at the feet of Marse Bobby.
