My best friend and former LSU basketball player, Duane DeArmond, has been diagnosed with cancer. For those of you that aren't aware, he played for the tigers from 1976-1980 back in the glory days with Rudy Macklin, Greg Cook, Jordy Hultberg, and the rest of the gang. He carried the nickname of Disco D. His beautiful wife Tory called me this past weekend to inform me of the bad news.

Big D now resides in Houston, TX. He has two sons Blake (21 yrs old) and Brandt who is a senior this year and a star receiver on his high school football team. Both of his sons are extremely well mannered and courteous young men who love their father dearly.

Duane is in a local Houston hospital now and is scheduled to be moved to MD Anderson tomorrow Tuesday 8-12-08. He is in tremendous pain. The cancer is mainly in one of his kidneys and has spread to his liver and lungs.

Prayer is a powerful thing. Please remember big D in your prayers if at all possible. Right now he needs all that we can give. He remains one of the biggest tiger fans of all time, and needs our help.

Edited 9-19 for update. People have been asking for updates about Duane.
Please see end of thread.

Duane played for RHS (Redemptorist High S.) in 1975 when my brother played for CHS (not Catholic
H.S. but Central H.S.) and Duane was a pioneer. He wasn't great but was so big and "not clumsy" that he would score at will. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Big D, even though I've never rooted for RHS. Hang tough.

Duane was my best friend for most of my senior year in HS after summer basketball camp in '75 even though we played at different schools in our district. I remember more than anything the fact that the 2 top teams in our district played for the state championship. I think we were good enough to make a run but such is life. I'll visit you Duane at MD Anderson this week. The "other" Big D (nickname in HS) from the aforementioned CHS. God Bless my frined. See you soon. Prayers are coming. Shaffer

Thanks Randy Breaux (Yes, I still have a memory)

Note: My brother Dennis wrote this, not me (RAPAROOT). I still don't know how he logged on under my name.

My youngest knew Duane. I asked him about him and said that he used to play pickups with Duane and Greg Cook and Lionel Green. Said Disco D was a good guy, a straight shooter and that he was liked by everyone who knew him at all. What a shame that it always seems to be people like this who get struck down by bad illness. Our families prayers are with him and his.

My dad has been friends with Duane for my whole life. We got this news Friday and started forwarding to prayer groups immediately. His only true hope may be the power of prayer. The Lord hears mass prayers like this. Please, as one Tiger Nation, pray for his healing and comfort and the comfort of his family. Please forward this prayer request on to as many people as possible. Thanks, and geaux tigers!!!

Thanks, Shaffer, and thanks to all who have responded. I will make sure that he sees this thread. Hopefully it will be several pages long whenever he sees it.

Yes, I was the point guard at Redemptorist that graduated the year before him. I went off to play ball in junior college and then came back to LSU after my two years there. Duane and I hooked back up since then.

One fortunate thing is that Duane has become a successful business man and works for very large firm that provides good benefits. He will receive the best care available. I just hope that it is not too late. Without question, he is one of the greatest people that I have ever met. His father died when he was very young, and his mom raised him and his big brother by herself for several years. She is also not doing well, but that is another story. She does not know about this yet.
(By the way the name is Braud not Breaux.)

Added a little special prayer for his Mom too...Duane the Tiger Nation is behind you and your family. Don't ever give up...while you still have life, you have hope. And remember no matter what, His Grace is Sufficient.

Admin, would you sticky this so when Ranty Randy goes to see Duane, they don't have to search for it? Thanks!
