Married w/ kids OT--does your family take priority over your parents

I'm asking this because of a situation an old friend is in. He's one of 5 brothers raised by a single mom. All of the men has gone on to be successful engineers, lawyers and businessmen and 3 of 5 are married with kids. Their mom wants to go back to college now to get an advanced degree and she needed a laptop. Laptops are relatively cheap nowadays but NONE of the brothers will muster up money to buy their own mother a laptop. If they split it 5 ways it could be less than $100 a brother. It's pretty low grade and shameful behavior to me, but I'm not married so I wouldn't know. What are yalls thoughts ?
is there a point at which your kids+wife >>>> your parents
Is there a point when you tell your parents "you're on your own?"

Maybe they're not that successful.

I'd say that your own kids come before your parents, but I'm not sure what that has to do with buying your parents a present that you can apparently afford

That's not priority. That's just being a dick. I was thinking this would be move in, or nursing home vs private schooling.

Sounds like there's more to the story.. Or she raised some selfish pricks and has no one to blame but herself.

I think it's pathetic, but does ones wife really rule the house ? I don't think I could ever be convinced to not help out the people that gave me everything.
I think that's grounds for divorce

Buy your mom the goddam laptop.
Don't worry about what your siblings do.

I'm broke as shite and if my mom wanted a laptop I'd give her mine. To me it says something about the mom if all five are unwilling to pitch in a relatively small amount of money to help

what a bunch of pieces of shite
i bought my mom a tv that was on sale, but more expensive than a low-end laptop, once just because i thought she deserved an HDTV

One wife is a controlling SOB that controls his bank account and Won't pay for the moms meals at family events

Laptops that will work for her can be had for $300 so it's even worse. $60 a person
Make it worse and count the wives. $300/8 is less than $40 a person

Everyone is different but I definitely would not think twice about spending a few hundred or even few thousand on something that an elder parent needs and cannot afford on their own.

What does having kids have to do with it. I would buy my mom whatever laptop she wanted.

This.
Your parents become your extended family when you marry, but I don't see where that fits into this story.

Engineers, Lawyers and businessmen can be living month to month just like the plumber or janitor!! They can also just be selfish pricks. If my mom wanted or needed a laptop for any reason I'd buy it tomorrow, no questions asked! Wife wouldn't say a thing, of course I'd do same thing if her mom needed one.

I think my own family comes before my parents, but I would definitely buy either of my parents a $500 laptop if they needed it and couldn't afford it.

There must be more to this story.

Interesting, is that a sub cultural thing? I feel like The emphasis on family in the south is larger as opposed to other parts of the country
