No 2006, it doesn't mean LSU will go into oblivion for sure or even be average. I get your point. Now to geauxgurt, other than the two Florida schools which didn't start playing legit football until the late 70s the other five have all won many more games than our beloved Tigers. You cite Oregon which hired from within and then criticize Miami for doing the same. Yes Tennessee and Nebraska have to recruit nationally and they have done that since the advent of black athletes and have been successful until recently. Sorry you are too young to remember when Penn ST was very good, it is ok I am too young to remember when Minnesota was good. Michigan changed their offensive philosophy. Hell if LSU hired a new coach that didn't, this board would implode. Sanctions did hurt USCw as did Kiffin and Sark may get them back..again who knows. The last time UF was very good they had the same coach that just won the NC but quit on the Gators.

Mac's LSU teams played as many as six conference games and the SEC was not as strong then. He had great teams in 69 and 70 and good teams the next three years. He doesn't have the record Les does and he also followed a NC coach. His teams could play with anybody and were known for their talent which are the only two similarities.

I guess the only solution is to fire Les and hire a coach that has a winning record against Bama.

Oh wait, I know a guy! He even has ties to LSU! He's 4-1 as a head coach against Alabama!

What was his name again? Was it Rick? No... Oh wait, Nick! Nick Saban. That's the fella!

Are we still counting the Mike Shula years? 0 for the last 4 against Saban is much more important at this point. Must win game this year, especially with our "better roster."

There are many similarities, but Les is a much better recruiter.

Mac just wasn't. He benefitted in his early years from guys like Corbett and McKiethen doing a lot of recruiting work for him. When they were no longer in the picture, recruiting took a dip and Mac in his last 5 or 6 years did not log a win against a ranked team.

As far as I'm concerned, the better team has won every year.

2007 - LSU clearly better in Saban's first year
2008-09 - Bama clearly better than JJ/JL in their second seasons, respectively
2010 - LSU slightly better as Bama takes a step back
2011 - I don't have a clue. Played 10 times, these teams would probably split.
2012 - Bama clearly better... too many early-season injuries
2013 - Bama clearly better.. 2013 NFL Draft killed the defense
2014 - Bama clearly better... 2014 NFL Draft killed the offense
2015 - LSU clearly better... 2015 NFL Draft killed the Bama offense

I think the fact that 6 of the 8 games were so close speaks to how well Miles prepares a team. He has been downright masterful compensating for QB deficiencies the latter half of his career.

If only he could shore up that area, he could go down as the greatest in the modern era.

Here's hoping Cameron can live up to his billing.

Very well stated and agree with the Miles handling of the teams shortcomings there. Hopeful they get better production at QB soon.

Bama has seen one of the greatest stretches in college football history over the last few years. They have been very hard to beat. We have played them extremely close most games, and lost on a few key plays.

Bama does not determine our success nor do they determine our place in the history books. Loosing to anyone sucks.

Loved Cholly Mac. Truly a LSU legend.

But, Miles is a much better staff builder and recruiter.

Like someone said, take away the rematch, and just one of the close OT losses to the gumps and then what is the perception. Probably wouldnt change a thing in here but around the country the it would be much different.

But, if and buts dont count in sports and it is what it is. Alabama got all the love and helped their already ridiculous recruiting advantage just enough to propel their program past LSU for the last 3 years.

Its a tribute to Miles' leadership that the program didnt take a major decline. Hell Urban Meyer ran completely out of the conference, something about an illness that wouldnt allow him to coach anymore.....

Any of u thinking, when someone says "get rid of Miles and u will really see the decline", is a blanket ignorant statement, then go back and look at history.
Very few programs 'maintained" the commitment to excellence after a legend left their program after 10+ years. There's only 3 statements that can be made. Either the program improves, maintains or declines. History will have the intelligent betting on a decline. I'll make this same bet when Saban leaves bama.

But keep telling yourselves Lsu wins despite Miles.

LMAO again at the ignorant.

Barely better and took a miracle fumble to seal a 6 point win...

Just clearly better. No qb comment needed.

Teams basically even

HA HA.Only one game mattered most and LSU got smoked.

2012 - Bama clearly better... too many early-season injuries

I agree here

2013 - Bama clearly better.. 2013 NFL Draft killed the defense

That's an excuse. Bama dominated LSU when it mattered most. This game showed me how much better Saban is at recruiting and player development.

2014 - Bama clearly better... 2014 NFL Draft killed the offense

Bullcrap. This was not a real good Bama team at all.. Lost to what turned out to be a very average Ole Miss team. Almost lost to Arkie.Gave up 44 points to AU and got creamed by Ohio St. The teams were pretty even except for two positions. QB and WR.

2015 - LSU clearly better... 2015 NFL Draft killed the Bama offense

Bama has a ton of depth there AND will be coached well enough to be ready by the time they play LSU.

When LSU wins, Miles is lucky. When LSU loses, Miles is a bad coach.

McClendon did not lose his job. I know that McClendon retired as coach at LSU at the age of 65, the mandatory retirement age for a public employee in LA. Again, he was not fired at all.

Cholly Mac was most certainly sent packing. AD Dietzel gave him one extra year (1979) so Mac could be President of the Coaches Association. Mac would have coached longer though he later said he "retired" just at the right time.

I loved Mac the man and never called for his head back in the 70s, but Mac was NOT a topnotch HC, imo. After the first couple of years of his regime, we rarely beat the top teams when we played them. His biggest win was the 1966 Cotton Bowl but we lost three regular season games that year and did not even deserve that Cotton bid. Sure, we lost to Nebraska close in 1975 and lost to NDame close in 1970 and lost to SoCal and bama close in 1979. The key there is we LOST all those games. We beat ND in 1971 but that ND team was not a top team that year. When we beat Alabama in 1969 and 1970, bama was not a top team.

As a longtime Tiger (since 1960), I can say this: when we played a top 10 team (someone who ended up in that group as season's end), I HOPED we would win but never expected it. When we play a Top Ten team now, I expect to win. My confidence in Miles' regime is much greater than I had for Mac's regime.

Cholly Mac's record against Alabama was 2-14, including losing the last 9 in a row. LSU also lost the first 5.

Just keeping it real.

agreed - Alleva is not known for actually developing athletic departments into powerhouses. His biggest claim to fame is showing his lack of a spine when he threw the Duke Lacrosse Team completely under the bus in the name of political correctness for what turned out to be a blatantly false accusation. He was more concerned with image than he was with facts and supporting his athletes. Now, we have him,and he really hasn't accomplished anything here.
