McClendon lost his job in large part to being 2-8 vs Bama. Les is 2-6 in his last 8 vs Bama. If we lose this year it will be the longest losing streak vs Bama in 34 years and would the first group on Seniors to be 0 for 4 vs Bama vs 1992.

These reasons make the Bama game larger than usual this year

LSU has bigger problems than Bama, as was demonstrated in 5 games last year, most notably a 17-0 shutout to Arkansas who is better at running the ball than Les is and they do it without Top 5 recruiting classes.

Yeah but has lost 4 in a row and lost the biggest one. And his roster has been as good or better most years

And same as Mac, LSU will spend years in the dump if we fire Miles

While I don't necessarily buy the premise that OP is putting out, this is also bullshite. LSU's program now versus in 1979 is apples to oranges.

If they hire the wrong person. Personally I'd keep Miles as long as Aleva is there because he'd screw it up for sure.

Mac coached against Bryant for basically all those seasons.

Les got two years and two of his 5 wins against Shula coached Bama, and then against a rebuilding Bama team.

I'd say the fact that since Saban's been there, Les is 3-6 against Bama says a ton about Les in comparison to Cholly Mac against Bryant.

The main reason the Mac lost his job was that he was losing more and more in state recruits to Larry Smith and Tulane along with their poor performance on the field.

Mac was also helped tremendously by John McKeithen being the governor. There was a steady decline in LSU football after he went out of office in 1972

I guess the only solution is to fire Les and hire a coach that has a winning record against Bama.

Les is 3-6 against Saban with two OT losses. How many coaches have beaten Saban 3 times. Another game went down to the wire and a fourth, LSU had an interception which didn't count. Win half of these and is Saban an all time great coach or is Miles? One of those Shula teams was favored and ranked in the top 5.

I'm not thrilled about this either, but stats can be skewed.

the game is big because in todays sec west, 1 loss could mean you are out of the race.

And would have won the sec west had he not been beaten by Miles.

Meaning we're a far more nationally-known brand now than then. Yes, I know we have always been a "sleeping giant" of sorts, and always had at least a modicum of national notoriety, but we couldn't sell the LSU name on a national scale then to the extent we can now. Our facilities and track record of putting people into the league now are up there with the top 5 or so in the country. I think it's absurd to think that LSU would crumble without Les at the helm. We could certainly find someone as capable or more capable to fill in and pick up where we left off if Les were to be gone a few years from now. I'm not saying I want Les gone, but we could find someone to get the train rolling.

This assessment is absolutely spot on.
I would add one other thing that was a problem for Coach Mac....he did not believe in changing his staff. Most of his assistants had been with him a long time. Compare that to the Bear who felt his # 2 priority (after winning) was getting his staff ready to become head coaches.
That's why I don't get too worked up when assistants leave. Good coaches (and managers) don't just take care of business but also develop good people as well.

lsu2006, that will obviously be the goal and the hope.Look at Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Michigan, Nebraska, USCw, Penn ST, and Miami for examples where that same goal and hope hasn't worked out yet despite being traditionally powerful programs. Yes LSU has advantages but no guarantee exists.

Of course not. But simply assuming LSU slips into a black hole of suck without Les is also ignorant.
